john, you know the territory he is talking about. paul ryan's committed to the united states automobile industry. does his record reflect this in his campaign pitch? >> not in the least. and it's kind of shocking that he would go to other states and pitch himself as a champion of the american auto industry. when paul ryan was elected to congress in 1998, southeastern wisconsin was one of the centers for auto-making and for auto parts. under his watch, a major auto parts plant, delphi closed, the kenosha plant closed, the janesville plant in his own hometown closed. and at least in part they closed because of trade rules and federal policies that paul ryan backed. his own constituents, members of the united auto workers and local 95 and local 72 begged him to vote on the side of auto workers and he did not. >> okay, so the trade agreements that he supported hurt the automobile industry, and he didn't work for his constituents to keep those plants open. that's on the record. now what about the automobile loan that was out there? do you think peo

so, just what paul ryan's debate strategy is going to be, let's go ringside to the debate site in kentucky. we're joined live by john heilemann, the national affairs editor for "new york" magazine and a pal of paul ryan. aaron shock, when was the last time you talked to ryan, and what is inside his head? >> well, sunday he was in chicago for a fund-raiser. i had the chance to have lunch with he and his wife jana, and, you know, he's doing great. he's had -- been doing debate prep with ted olsen who has been playing joe biden, but the great thing about paul is he's a man of substance. he's a man of specifics. he's a man of great policy depth which is why i think joe biden chose him as his running mate, and -- and so he really just needs to use this opportunity to communicate with the american people about what his plans are, and really to hold vice president biden's feet to the fire as to what the obama rhetoric s.a lot of their time has been spent villifying paul ryan, villifying their plan without offering specifics of their own or really what they have done for the four years while they have been in control of the

ryan did not make two requests. he made at least four. that's a fact check i'm sure joe is really upset about. the rest of it he probably wants to hear nothing about. johneen looking into this. paul ryan has been criticizing green pork for awhile but he also asked for money to create green jobs. some people might say this is practical. others might say hypocritical. >> that's where the line is. when the green pork was being given out, paul ryan went right up to the trough and asked for his. this is part of the problem of being a congressman. the part of being a member of congress is requesting money for your constituents. an ideological fiscal conservative like paul ryan is in a double bind. on the one hand he has to provide for his constituents. when he hits the campaign trail and rails against government spending, his accusations of hypocrisy not only for requests for green pork but also because here's a guy who spent his entire adult life working in government running against government spending. >> how much does this hurt paul ryan? do people understand that distinction? you might not want the stimulus but then when it happens, you got to go fight f
