ktvu's john sasaki is live where he spoke to the boy's mom. john? >> reporter: look behind me, 40 people are still left behind from the candlelight vigil. 75 people came here to pay tribute to derrick gaines, he was shot and killed last night be police. >> reporter: derrick gaines is dead and police say they had no choice put to shoot him. >> they didn't have to do that. killed a 15-year-old. >> reporter: investigators say last night derrick gaines and another teen were working through this gas station which police believe were suspicious so they chased him and derrick gaines pulled a gun. >> our officer in protection of his own life discharged his weapon. >> reporter: police did not say why the officer found the boys suspicious. >> i cannot be more expect for reasons of the contact. >> he is black. that is what. plain and simple. black. >> reporter: he talked to his mother 15 minutes ago. >> i think it was the fact he is black. a minority in south city. and because he had red tennis shoes they labeled him. >>> the officer is on administrative leave

john sasaki is live in the city south this afternoon where the police just wrapped up a press conference a few minutes ago. john? >> reporter: mike, police wrapped up the press conference about 20 minutes ago and they left a lot of unanswered questions. but any did release new information including confirming the boy's name is derrick gains. they also did say he pulled a gun on the officer, although they did not say whether he pointed it at the officer. it hatched before 9:00 last night at an arco station near mcdonald's where he had been hanging out with friends before the shooting. he left with the friend on foot. a police officer approached them because they say he was acting suspiciously and that's when he ran. his aunt told ktvu that he's the kind of boy that would run if he saw the police. the officer gave chase and shortly after, the boy, achording to police -- according to the police, pulled the gun and that's when the police opened fire, killing the boy. police would not be specific about why the officer made the initial stop. >> the officer felt that the two suspects were actin

john sasaki is live there with the latest on the traffic mess and the efforts to reopen the highway, john. >> reporter: ken, i want to show you what's been happening in the past few minutes if you take a look at the power poles you can see some mats hanging on the power poles and lines tieing up on the right. if you pan over you can see the lines go straight down across the freeway and down there in the distance, the power pole that was knocked down is still lying across much of the roadway. all the lines there are lying across the roadway as well. although just a couple of minutes ago, pg & e crews moved in and cut off a big part of that power pole with a chain saw. now you see that truck moving across that area where it couldn't previously because that power pole was there. they are making progress here. let's take a look at news chopper 2 video from just a little while ago. we'll show you the scene out here. eastbound lanes of traffic on i4 are very busy this time of day. all that traffic is being redirected. we just spoke to caltrans and they told us what's being done with the tra

i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm john sasaki.e worked through the night and morning to figure out who is behind the deadly shooting. two of the victims are still fighting for their lives. christien kafton joins us live from crest ranch park with what happened. >> reporter: there is still a lot of evidence in this police investigation. we can see the crime scene tape over here. vallejo police are still looking for the gunman that opened fire. one man is dead and three others are recovering from bullet wounds. police say the shooting started at 8:15 last night. as the family was at a barbecue and picnic. witnesses tell police someone in a dark colored sedan started shooting. the victims did not wait for ambulances. by the time police arrived they had been driven to two different hospitals in the area. a man died from his injuries. a 67-year-old woman was listed in critical condition and a 17- year-old boy. a 35-year-old man is recovering from a bullet wound to his arm. this morning about an hour and a half ago we went by vallejo po

welcome back to mornings on 2 i'm john sasaki. >> and i'm claudine wong.orial sits at the lagoon where this young child drowned. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge is live rob the scene with what we -- is live on the scene with what we know what happened. >> reporter: this all just happened in matter of minutes. the three-year-old girl wondered away from her apartment and found floating unresponsive in this nearby lagoon that is just a few feet away. neighbors this morning have set up a small memorial here at the edge of the water. last night people that live in this complex came together and held a candle light vigil. many stunned by this drowning. the girls family called 911 shortly after 4:00 yesterday morning to report her missing. san mateo police moved in and launched a search and a short time later we were told it was a neighbor that found the girl floating in the lagoon. police and paramedics did cpr but they were not allowed to revive the little girl. they remember seeing the girl playing here in the complex. >> terrible. devastating. they were

i'm claudine wong. >> i'm john sasaki. it happened around 4 :00 this morning. police are still trying to figure out what happened and who was responsible. lorraine joins us live from the scene with what we know so far. >> john, police have 28th avenue blocked off right now while they conduct interviews and they try to figure out what happened. you can see the coroner is on scene right now. we talked with family members out here. they tell us it's tough. one of their loved ones is dead and three other relatives are in the hospital. those three men were transferred to the highland hospital. the shooting happened just before 4 a.m. near 28th avenue and east 16th street. the men were drinking and hanging out when someone opened fire. a family member says someone drove up and another person got out of the car, walked up, and started shooting. she tells us her family was not involved in any gangs. she thinks a verbal fight led to the violence. >> i think they were asking for something, or i don't know. >> police tell us two of the victims are in stable condition. one
