ktvu's john sasaki continues coverage from connecticut, where people are coming together to express their sorrow. john? >> reporter: ken, the scene is just up that hill behind me, but about 40 minutes from here in the city of stratford is a huge vigil tonight. thousands of people honoring all the victims of this heinous act, but especially teacher victoria soto. the entire state is in mourning, and it's especially deep. ♪ >> reporter: this community is bustling on a saturday night, but with heavy hearts, and that's how it's been all day. >> it feels so unreal. to think that those poor children couldn't ever see something like this coming and those parents who now have to live without their children, it's too much. >> reporter: beyond the school community, which is so profoundly impacted, some people nearby also witnessed the devastation. >> we came around the corner of this fire house, two little boys, one screaming hysterically, and the other one telling him, stop, stop running! stop! >> reporter: she says this tragedy would forever change her fond memories of being a student at sandy ho

at sandy hook, i'm john sasaki, ktvu news. >>> noah posey will be laid to rest tomorrow. his uncle said noah was smart as a whip. noah's twin sister and older sister were in different areas of sandy hook elementary school and survived friday's shooting. >>> the fbi is talking to those closest to adam lanza in an effort to try to piece together what led up to the shooting. federal officials are on the ground interviewing relatives and friends of the lanza family. they are also checking dozens of gun stores and shooting ranges in connecticut. police want to know why lanza's mother kept such high powered rifles and what kind of experience lanza had with her guns. there was a story that someone was impersonating lanza on facebook. police are also investigating that report. >>> lanza had been diagnosed with aspberger's syndrome. a ucla psychologist says there's no clear link between aspberger's and violent behavior. >> there will be no school in newtown and the nation will be reviewing and perhaps revamping security. ktvu's deborah villalon is live after asking officials what

john sasaki looked at a list of those crimes and joins us now with what he found. >> reporter: it shows a government that has fraud and a large state of departments perpetrated in a number of ways. from april 2011 through june 2012 there were more than 1,400 investigations and 15 cases in a loss to the state. >> taxpayer money should be handled carefully. >> reporter: in some cases a courier were charged. >> unfortunately human beings being how we are. some people will take advantage of situations. >> reporter: the state athletic commission overpaid 18 inspectors nearly 119,000 hours in overtime. >> less time on bills more time on oversight, you do it in local government and it's better in local government. so people have to be held accountable. >> reporter: and the natural resources agency circumvented by reimbursing $48,000 to pay for their commutes to and from work. the state is grateful for the whistle blowers that came forward. >> typically it's another state employee that sees that something is going on and something wrong is happening and they report it to us. >> they should be h

john sasaki is live for us in newtown where a memorial has been set up for the victims. john. >> reporter: we are in sandy hook. this is one of the primary places people are coming to pay their respects to the people who were lost in this tragedy two days ago. but just up the hill if you want to take a look up there, that is where you see the folks walking up the street, that is the route people are taking to actually walk up toward the school and toward the fire house. that area is actually blocked off by the state police. nobody can drive up there expect for emergency personnel and residents that live up there. people still want to walk up there and get as close as they can to pay as many respects as they can to all the folks up there including the firefighters in that volunteer fire house. here this is really the primary folks people are coming and bringing flowers as you can see they are lighting candles. they are bringing teddy bears. hanging various things on the christmas trees that are here as well. and earlier we did talk to a father who brought his six-year- old

ktvu john sasaki is live in newtown with more. >> reporter: it's now about noon here in sandy hook, andy few people here are affected more, of course, than the people who are involved at the school over there on dickinson, at sandy hook elementary school. the teachers, the faculty, the students, the parents, of course all of those folks devastated, totally devastated. but also very, very powerfully affected are former students, people who live in the area, and just about 20 minutes ago, we talked to someone who is here helping her mother-in-law, who lives just up the street from the fire house, who was a student at sandy hook elementary school back in the sixties, and she also just happened to be here outside the house where her mother-in-law lives in front. and she happened to look over at the fire house when she saw and realized what was going on. she told us about that. >> two little boys, one screaming hysterically, and the other one telling them, stop, stop running, stop, stop! and then the police went up that driveway and within a matter of a minute, there was at least 10 to 12 hu
