john? >> reporter: scott, governor jerry brown discussed his proposed budget for california late this afternoons staff mistakenly released it online today instead of next week as planned. but, still, getting it out early did not dampen the bad news. >> we're making some very painful reductions. a mother and kids are getting the same welfare check in real dollars that they got in the 80s. >> reporter: governor brown is predicting california's deficit for the fiscal year to be $9.2 billion. that's much better than last year's $26.6 billion budget gap which brown tackled by cutting welfare grants and assistance to the elderly and disabled. still, the governor wants to raise taxes on those earning $250,000 or more and boost the state sales tax by a hal cent. if voters don't go for that, the governor will call for an automatic cut of nearly $5 billion from public education. that equals about three weeks of school. >> as willie sutton said, when asked why rob banks, he said "that's where the money is." edge station a lot where the money is and if you don't have money it comes out of schools. >> repor

john, what are you hearing? >> what you hear from voters, scott, is that mitt romney has sewn the seeds of doubt about newt gingrich. they worry that gingrich is too unpredictable and he'll botch the chance republicans have to beat barack obama. voters also tell you something in what they're not saying. last week in south carolina, voters talked about gingrich almost like a preacher in that he spoke to their conservative passion. you don't hear that as widely here in part because romney has forced gingrich to spend so much time defending himself. even when voters feel more passionate about another candidate, they pick romney. a woman i talked to said she really wanted to vote for rick santorum but in the end she picked romney because she believed he could beat barack obama. i wanted to go with my heart, she told me, but in the end i went with my head. >> pelley: john, they will take their hearts and their heads to the polls tomorrow morning. thank you very much. federal investigators were here in florida today at the scene of that deadly chain-reaction crash. it happened yesterday on i-75 south of gainesville when
