. >> congressman john shadegg of arizona, thank you for joining us. >> you bet. >> the battle over healthll. what is the rest of the story? what does reform mean for you and me? joining us now is vijay, a global correspondent for the economy. >> great to be with you. >> as you heard the conversation that jean and i were having with congressman shadegg and having other conversations earlier today. a lot of confusion about what this health care reform will mean. and you say there's kind of a rest of the story. you say sometimes we understand the first word of the sentence but not, if you will, the second. for example, one of the things you say is forcing employers to pay for health insurance a bad idea? >> it sounds like it would be good for workers. 64 million uninsured. in fact, most economists that look at this say this employer mandate would actually end up being a tax on the lowest earning workers. >> how does that work? >> here is why. at the low end of the spectrum, particularly unskilled workers, retail sector, for example, intense competition. most of these companies don't offer he

john shadegg's right. if you like your plan, get ready to lose it. because you will lose it. the public plan will crowd out the private plan and everybody will fall under the same category and we'll have health care that is rationed in america. we'll have lines. and we'll have bureaucrats with their nose in the air deciding making life and death decisions on the health care that will be provided to american people. it is inevitable. it's resulted in that every time that it's been found. now, i draw another comparison. the canadians are forbidden by law to jump ahead in the line. now, if they didn't have a line, you wouldn't have to have a law that forbid you from jumping ahead in the line and accessing health care. so when you need a hip replacement, i have seen the data on this and i actually have to guess, but i believe what i saw for hip replacement number was 171 days of waiting. something in that category is pretty close. i don't know how long you wait in the united states, not at all if you're in a hurry. somebody will get you in. they'll find way to schedule it. we hav

we love john shadegg's initiatives. look at what you're able to do with automobile insurance. you can buy it across state lines. we ought to be able to do that with healthcare. take another step forward. if you're good driver, you get a good driver discount. what if you're responsible in how you take care of your body? you exercise. you watch your cholesterol level. you don't smoke. you don't drink, gosh, should you get a premium discount? we think you should, and it's called wellness programs and trying to encourage people to take a greater incentive in their personal wellness, and i tried to work with some democrats and have an amendment coming to do that. the white house advised one of the democrats on the other side not to work with republicans on that amendment. that is bizarre to me because it is the president himself that talked about some ofs these companies doing these wellness programs but now are saying they don't want to do that. it is very cheer that the government option is their plan. they're calling it health reform but it's all about government control. it is

broun: i want to come back to something my dear friend john shadegg said, where he's talking about cost. i want to just inject here something that happened in my medical practice when i was practicing in southwest georgia and what i'm fixing to say is going to point out the government -- that government intrusion in the health care system is what's driven up the cost for everybody, whether they're private insurers or public insurers on schip or medicaid. back a number of years ago, i was in private practice, had a one-man office with several employees and i had a fully automated lab in my office. patient would come in to see me with a red sore throat, running a fever, aching all over, coughing, runny nose, white patches on their throat. i would in my fully automated lab would do a c.b.c. a complete blood count. i could do it in five minutes, charged $12. congress passed a bill called the clinical laboratory improvement act, or clea. it -- or clia. it shut down every lab in the country, hospital labs had to get a waiver. mr. akin: let me get this right, laws passed here in congress shut

last night my good friend, john shadegg, in a special order was talking about the draft of the bill that energy and commerce is going to be looking at next week. and during mr. shadegg's discussion last night on this floor he said that public health care option is not an option at all. and in fact the american people, if i could speak to them, mr. speaker, i would ask them to look at what is being proposed and how quickly this major policy change is being brought to the forefront. next week on tuesday, the energy and commerce committee is going to start their process of looking at the health care reform bill. tuesday they are scheduled to have opening statements by the members of the committee. wednesday and thursday, they are going to have markup. now, mr. speaker, i don't think the american public quite understands that term. it's a term that we use, as you know, where the committee goes through a bill line by line, issue by issue, section by section, and amendments are offered, voted on, and are put in place in the final product. well, the chairman of the energy and commerce committee
