i think back to john carlos, tommy smith, some people wearing hoodies after trayvon martin. know, the clippers coming out with their uniforms on backwards to protest donald sterling's racist comments. i think that's appropriate, nonviolent and certainly nonrioting. and i think pro-athletes should do more of it, i think. >> what do you think, mary kathrine. >> it didn't bother me the nfl has rules about political expression or free speech expression on the field they should punish fairly across the board and make that the rule. but in this case i thought it was nonviolent and fairly appropriate. and here's the thing, the folks who came to the nfl asking for action was a police officer's group, which makes me a little squeamish when you're saying law enforcement can say i have an issue with this political speech so we can get rid of it. i think the answer is more speech not less. >> what if, juan, you're a police officer at the stadium and you're doing crowd control as they have in every stadium. and you go out and you see, you know, these guys come out of the tunnel with thei

the way this now iconic protest moment did in mexico city did when john carlos and tommy smith raisethe air as the star spangled banner played at the 1968 summer olympics. there were those who viewed smith and carlos with similar disdain. we know at the time famed sports caster brett musburger said "smith and carlos look like a couple of black-skinned storm troopers." joini ining me now is former olc athlete dr. john carlos. >>> mr. carlos, i want to hear your reaction to the backlash that those rams players have faced this week. >> well, it's relative to 68. backlash is because you did something that was necessary to do that the general public might not have been ready for: when i sit and look at the plays for a while, st. louis and all of those players in bas ket ball and feel so far in dealing with these issues, it refleblgts on john carlos back 46 years ago. i believe what you've seen today is just that. people around the world now are saying enough is enough. that's basically what the rams were saying. that's basically what the clippers were saying relative to their former owner

this recalled for me at least the tom judge smith -- john carlos protest back in 1978, which was deeplyh americans, got people angry but they did it and it was meant to sent a message. what did you think of this protest? >> well, i spoke to john carlos on the phone today. one of the things john impressed upon me, first and foremost, his utter solidarity with what the rams players did, but he took great issue with those who said, they should just shut up and play. in john carlos' words, they're asking these players to be like paint on the wall, just to be seen and not heard. but these are human beings. they have children. and if we're ever going to stand up to these atrocities, the time is now. the other thing john carlos said, and this certainly gave me a lot of hope, he said, i remember in 1968 telling the media, if you think i'm a bad man, wait until that next generation. well, i've been waiting almost 50 years and i feel like that next generation's finally here. >> i should mention, there have been, as the reporter that was on earlier said, there have been some shows of support, too,

for edification purposes, john carlos was the athlete at the 1968 olympics who went to the podium along with tommy smith and raised his hand in what was called at that time a black power salute. at that time, much was said about john carlos and tommy smith, many people criticized them for taking the podium and for making this gesture. they were said to be outside of the mainstream. but i believe that history has vindicated them. because they were a part of the avant-garde. they actually were cause manage people to understand that the black -- causing many people to understand that the black power movement at that time was much bigger than many thought. i had a john carlos moment because i saw this clip where the rams players came into the arena, hands up, don't shoot. it was a john carlos moment because this has become the new symbol, a new statement, a statement wherein people around the country now are calling to the attention of those who don't quite understand that this is a movement that will not dissipate. it will not evaporate. it's a movement that is going to continue because young people, a new
