joining us now, john stanton, washington reporter, roll call reporter, thanks for joining us. >> good to be here. >> what's going on right now among republicans that there does not seem to be a sense of urgency there. do you think it's negotiating tactics? >> yeah, i think it's a negotiating tactic sort of within their own conference frankly, i think the leadership has a sense of urgency privately right now. seemed like they had it out there in public a week ago and they backed away from that. they are now supporting this cut, cap, and balance bill the conservatives want, this is more really a negotiating tactic with their own conservatives, trying to convince them they are serious about trying to pass these bills so when they do fail they will then need to go back to them and say we have to do the mcconnell plan or some other debt limit raising legislation and they need them to buy into it. and right now, they just don't have that support within their own conference. >> that is the dynamic i sort of thought was going on, that's why my hair spontaneous come busted today. this is now a

. >> joining us now from washington, for the very latest is john stanton, reporter for "roll call" newspaperou, john. >> good to be here. >> so, i find myself in the strange position of actually sort of rooting for john boehner here, for him to do well, for him to have a better day today than he had yesterday. do you think it's fair to say that he, in fact, did have a better day today? >> compared to yesterday, certainly. i think today it would have been hard for him to have a worse day, frankly, than he did yesterday. he had jim jordan comes out saying he didn't have votes, a lot of his members were very, very skeptical. cbo came out and said his bill ç didn't have enough savings as he thought it had. he had to pull back from that. yesterday certainly was pretty rough. today has been much, much better. he's had, you know, a number of members who were on the fence, come out now and said they will vote for the bill. cbo gave him a better score on his rewrite. he seems to have momentum going, so on those metrics, seems to be a better day, yes. >> i wouldn't find myself rooting for republican i

last night on this show, john stanton said that the number of republicans in the house who have decided it does not matter if we default, the number of denialists that this is a big deal is rising now, that house republicans lost a republican economist out of a meeting when he said a default would be a bad thing. we're now really facing catastrophe without facing the debt ceiling and house republicans seem to be getting less likely to do it, not more likely no matter what happy talk is happening in the senate. so what happens now? president obama has to be thinking what president clinton rather forcibly put into words today.
