joining us is john stanton, bureau chief at buzz feed. thank you for being here. it's good to see you. i'm sorry you had to watch me reading the whole time. my teleprompter broke. so the deal in the senate today on immigration reform make s it seem more possible in the senate. but the thing that's unspoken and i'm curious about is who is against it and how powerful are they? >> well, in the senate, they are not very powerful. that's just folks like ted cruz, potentially rand paul, although he's a bit squishy on it, i think. chuck grassley, they are opposing it. they come up with a bunch of reasons. we need stronger border security. jeff sessions does not like the idea of having a pathway to citizenship. he sees it as amnesty. but in the senate, i think it's definitely the tightest turn. >> there will be no votes, but there are not enough to stop it. >> they can't at this point. >> is there anybody in terms of outside pressure who might be able to flip more senators against it? right now it looks like it's going to pass. >> i think the senate is solid. i'm not sure

there's a lot to break down with this, so luckily buzz feed's washington bureau chief, john stanton, here. john, thanks for joining us. >> it's good to be here. >> let me ask you about a specific report that's been circulating. congressman mario diaz belart, a republican, said that the group, his group has been derailed twice by nancy pelosi and other democratic leaders who want illegal immigrants to benefit from health care subsidies. last month pelosi insisted they were not pursuing this option and diaz-belart said i'm not sure she wants a bill. break this down. what's happening here? >> a lot of republicans want the law to be written in a way that those who get into the pathway do not get any of the benefits like medicare, social security, that kind of thing. in some cases some of the proposals would even make it illegal for hospitals to serve them if they came in. it depends, some would like to see that only during the pathway. some argue it should be for the totality of their time in the united states even after they become citizens. that's the realistici sticking . democrats wa

joining us now is the great john stanton at buzz feed, mr. stanton, thank you for being here tonight. it's nice to see you. >> pleasure to see you. >> is immigration reform falling apart? lindsay graham says it isn't, but marco rubio seems very confident that it is. >> well, i guess it sort of depends on how you want to define falling apart. i personally never thought it had a chance of passing because the house republican conference is very much divided on this thing. there is some thought in washington that marco rubio may be playing a bit of a jedi mind trick on his republican colleagues saying, oh, i have all of these concerns, we may not be able to pass it. they get a few additions to the bill, couple tweaks. he can then come back and say, look, i was very concerned just like you were and we were able to make some changes, the best policy we're going to get, so we need to get behind it and hopefully -- and the reformers, you know, position that would help bring enough republicans along. you know, they should be able to get 60 votes or cl
