it began when john mccormick and jay george stewart displayed a christmas tree on the capital grand to celebrate this special time of year. in 1970 the architect of the capitol partnered with the u.s. forest service to find the perfect candidate for the people's tree. we are grateful for the efforts that help make this annual festive tradition a success. this year the tree made an impressive journey, 700 miles by c and 4000 miles by truck to be here on the west front lawn of the u.s. capitol. thank you to everyone who helped this tree make the trip. we appreciate your support in bringing the holiday spirit to washington. i want to thank the capitol grounds and arboretum team who have spent many days and nights since the arrival of the tree decorating it with thousands of lights and handcrafted ornaments from alaskan communities. this is my first year as the architect and in the time since my appointment i have been continually oppressed by the hard work -- impressed by the hard work. we are all grateful for your efforts and cannot wait to see the people's tree lit up in all of its sple
