it is not governor john sununu. i don't even know john's last name. there was a heated discussion we were having. a letter arrived that was distributed simply signed, john. it addressed, dear congressman. it was read out loud. it provided a little bit of levity in the midst of an extremely serious discussion about spending and taxes. somehow i had found in my files the letter. you will get a gist of it pretty quickly. dear congressman, my name is john. i am a warehouse man at a local company. my wife works part-time at a day care center. together, we take him not much more than $1000 a month. i used to be a farmer. i am 56 years old with a high school education. we budget our money carefully and usually spend no more than $50 a month on beer. [laughter] at current prices, that is three cases of beer per month. if you raise the tax one dollar a sixpack, we will only be able to buy two cases of beer per month. that will be bad and here is why. my wife is more fun if you get what i mean, when she drinks three cases. former republican senator, john sununu. former white house adviser, david plouffe.ell us about the new leadership. >> it matters that they got these leadership races done pretty shortly. the rank and file were pleased that they had them so quickly. that gives them a little bit of momentum. they are very well-known to the rank and file. kevin mccarthy, pretty straightforward. steve scalise, more conservative. >> the republican study committee which is a conservative policy group. i don't think there will be anything missed in terms of momentum and cadence. they got two bills done, one bill on nsa, one bill on defense authorization. >> was kevin mccarthy better than eric cantor? >> my suspicion is that boehner and mccarthy will move in alignment. there will not be the fear that you will get stabbed in the back. scalise does have conservative bona fides. >> let me skip around and say john that the cantor vote shocked some republicans. the race is a tossup. what implications will that have for other republicans? >> i don't think it will have any more implications beyond

i picked up the phone and in his most cuddly tones, i heard the voice of john sununu on the phone. he told me we were having a celebration and asked if i would come and i was delighted to. i have always had a high regard to the president. i was sworn in as a new member of the house of representatives 45 years ago today. [applause] i served until three gears years ago. when i walked into the house, my best friend was a young republican member. bill and i had gone to college together. we served in the leming slay church --legislature and we served until he died at an early age. i remember in those days when bill was explaining washington to me. he one day started talking about who he thought would be the top leaders over the next 10 years. he said and it proved to be correct, he said the best we've got is george bush. i think there are a lot of people in washington who worked with president bush who felt that way over the years. i say that not because of leadership he showed on this budget deal we're talking about but also because i was chairing the foreign operation subcommittee dur
