bush, former new hampshire governor john sununu, also the author of the new book "the quiet man." good to see you. what did you think of the debate last night? >> i thought it was a great debate. we finally got serious discussion on issues, the moderators did a good job and the candidates all did a very exceptional job, in at least trying to define in a constructive way the differences among themselves. lou: and the clash particularly between most of the candidates, i'll put it that way, and kasich and bush who were intent it seemed on distancing themselves from trump and his call for deportation of 11 million immigrants. how do you think that went? >> well, you know, all those candidates, all the candidates are for sealing the border. and i think that's an important thing for everybody involved in the republican primary process. so that critical issue -- lou: can i interrupt you? can i interrupt you? such a thing was unthinkable in 2012 among the field of candidate that there be unanimity on that. this has been, if i may use the expression, a migration for the republican party in

senator be alfonse demat toe, john sununu, gordon humphrey, they're all jumping in now. sure this means that kasich is the guy, but the firepower's there at least behind legitimate candidates or what some would perceive to be legitimate candidates. >> well, i think what's important to note, though, is there are a lot of different establishment candidates getting a lot of endorsements, so if you fast forward to when the primaries start, people start going to the polls, you know, marco rubio, jeb bush, john kasich, chris kristy. if they're -- chris christie, if they're all whacking up delegates, that creates more of an opportunity for an alternative from the conservative end. now on the flip side of that, if they're able to narrow the field down amongst the establishment, then if you still have trump, carson, fiorina, cruz and they're all whacking up candidates, that might provide that opportunity for that establishment candidate. so the real question is, what exactly does this field look like when people start heading to the polls? liz: yeah. it's a little clearer on the

john kasich who has some strong institutional support in new hampshire with the sununu, former senator sununu and a couple others and ted cruz and jeb bush far behind in single digits. >> i think you will always see, you saw in a previous debate that mrs. fiorina did very well. she was outstanding. you know, many of these politicians are master salesmen. they are experts on eloquence and opine and say all the right things. these forums don't necessarily play to the strength of mr. trump and dr. carson, so the bar for them is quite different in these debates. in order for these candidates, the establishment candidates to get any kind of bump, they've just got to do outstanding off the charts in these debates. that's not the bar for mr. trump and dr. carson. they can be mediocre. they could not even show up and say much. then look at what happened to mrs. fiorina two or three weeks later. she's gone back to the bottom rung of the pile. it could happen again with mr. rubio. they could rise from the debate but will it last? >> i noticed in watching abc yesterday with dr. carson that he is
