we could see some tension emerge with john thune as the republican leader in the senate.une is a traditional republican. he has, of course, bent the knee to donald trump. he has said he wants to enact donald trump's policies as quickly as possible and appoint his nominees as quickly as possible. there will be times when john thune will, i think, stand up for the traditional wing of the republican party for keeping government open, for not suspending the senate's constitutional duty to vet nominees and so i think y there will be a clash between donald trump and john thune. i don't know exactly which of these fights it will be. almost certainly i would predict that will happen within the first year of the trump presidency. >> april, if trump can't get everybody in his party lined up behind his agenda, is that agenda at risk? what can he accomplish without congressional support and what will he need everybody to get done? >> this president is going to have to work to unify. as we saw, this was a bipartisan-passed budget bill that's been kicked down the road until next year.

you have a leader john thune, how does he navigate a trump presidency? ensuring the senate does its duty to advise and consent? yes: consent is important, sometimes you give advice and it turns out to be we don't think this person is up to the job, but not often. usually that person does not get to the senate floor, their name is withdrawn, my rule and the rule for most republicans if not people in the senate, a president that's a lot of leeway here and if it is somebody coming in and leaving when the president leaves i try my best to be for that person. if they came in for life like a judge or a tenured term i looked at them in a different way than the people literally there only when the president is there and people i would have opposed never got out of the committee or wound up withdrawing their name, the senate wants the committees to look at nominees, they will. there is a process where you are looked at by usually the fbi. a little controversy right now, but the senate for look at these nominees for various reasons they will not be nominated. norm
