john thune wanted this two-part bill for reconciliation. but because mike johnson doesn't think he can get to bills across, we assume that house republicans, a faction of them who are very willing to make things political, there are a handful of them for even into buck trump on some issues. thomas massie was willing to still vote against mike johnson despite the fact that trump said that he was the one he wanted for speaker. so you are going to see these conservative voices continue to have power in one of their biggest things is spending cuts. it is going to be a key thing to watch. however, there is a chance that some of these republicans are going to feel more comfortable falling in line with trump. republicans are going to be even more willing to push back and not let things go through. there is a chance we see more cohesion working together when trump is the one calling the shots. host: three republicans, to members getting private meetings behind closed doors that every vote is going to cap for mike johnson. guest: making sure everyon

and now it will be up to mike johnson and john thune to to make it a reality. it's certainly going to be a difficult process, but if they pull this off, it will be a historic bill. >> yeah, i covered when the democrats did their reconciliation a couple of years ago. it is quite a process. and christie johnson has this very, very slim majority. you know, it's a slimmer majority than republicans weirdly have in the senate. um, how do you expect that to play out and what role, if any, do democrats play here? >> i mean, i don't expect it to play out very well. i think that speaker johnson got very lucky on getting his votes through on the first ballot. >> but i don't actually expect that cohesion to continue. look, he still has a pretty big problem with the house freedom caucus. and of course, that's before he gets to how he's going to be working with democrats. and then over in the senate, of course, you have john thune, who is unlike mcconnell, he's not somebody who rules with an iron fist. um, and so look, they're they're dreaming big. and that's that's great. t

chuck schumer with many more years than john thune in playing chess with the other side, in the parliamentaryoves that you have over on the senate side? >> yes, thune watched mitch mcconnell for a long time, he was a top mitch mcconnell sort of acolyte, and mitch mcconnell is still around and a lot of his leadership team is up in the air, but some are still around. a lot of the experience will still be around john thune. he has a leadership team already that's been in the room sort of knows how to deal with not only the schumer team and that operation, but also just the senate in general, the way that the floor works, so, i think that they'll probably hit the ground running, it's not like, you know, when speaker johnson became speaker after kevin mccarthy was without-- he had no experience at all in leadership, so it's not that type of situation. >> what role will senator mitch mcconnell play in the 119th congress? as noted he's still serving and representing kentucky. >> he'll still have a voice in leadership and still obviously a lot of folks look at him as somebody who has a ton of experie

serious confirmation debates, you have a new senate republican leader, someone you worked with, john thune how does he navigate a trial presidency 2.0, some nominees that will be contentious in ensuring the senate does its duty to advise and consent? >> i do think the consent part is an important part of it. sometimes, you get advice, and the advice turns out to normally be, we don't think this person is up to the job. that does not happen very often. usually, that person does not get to the senate floor, for whatever reason. something comes up, their names were withdrawn. seldom does that ever happen here tomorrow normally, steve, and i think this would be the rule for most republicans, if not most people in the senate, my rule was, a president gets a lot of leeway here. if there is somebody coming in, leaving when the president leaves, i tried my best to before that person, whether it was a democratic resident or republican, if it is someone coming in for life, like a judge, or 10 year term on a commission or something, i looked at them in a different way than i did the people that would

and i don't know if john thune has.ne has had a conversation with with president elect trump to say, hey, you know, there's a lady that might tell us we can't do any of this. and when, when, when she says that, i don't want you to tell me to fire her because i don't want to do that. like, that is a part of the conversation we're not actually having, because it's the whole reason why protection for dreamers or some immigration stuff didn't get in there during the biden administration because parliamentarian said, oh, that can't go in there. and people were like, overrule the parliamentarian and fire her. and the democrats at the time were willing to do that. i don't think john thune would be willing to do that. he's not. what about donald trump? >> so john thune, actually, he's the new senate republican leader in the senate. he has actually said to his own members, we reported this at punchbowl news, do not try to overrule the parliamentarian. so you're right. there is this process. you can't just do anything through rec

and going forward, that does seem -- and john thune is very much that party building kind of guy.f senator who is very much interested in maintaining a republican majority in the senate and finding the right candidates who are winner candidates, not fringe crazy candidates, the kind that donald trump supports. >> i think that one of the reasons i'm glad you showed those numbers at the beginning of the show is republican politicians can count votes and when donald trump claims on the basis of a victory that was actually smaller than hillary clinton's victory in the popular vote when trump won the electoral college in 2016, they know trump is speaking nonsense. donald trump, by the way, in mid december said that he had the biggest mandate in 129 years. that was a really strange number for him to pick because it doesn't even go back to an election year. i went back. it's 1895, and there were almost no elections then. a guy called frederick -- what's his name? frederick greenhalge got elected in massachusetts. he has the greenhalge mandate. obviously, it's nonsense. and i think thune

sounds like john thune wants two bills, border and energy and eventually get to taxes.you come on this issue? >> i'm a little like the president, i'm agnostic on one versus two. i don't think debt ceiling increase should be in the bill. many conservatives have not voted for all the spending. forcing us to make a decision on that forces us to be maybe not a yes vote on tax cuts and things we're for. i hope they don't divide us by sticking a debt ceiling vote in there. >> steve: sounds like mr. trump and mr. thune thune will have to figure out what they want by talking to the speaker because the speaker has to be able to say you guys in senate and white house can want whatever you want, in the house, i can only pass this. it is really predicated on what can get through. >> i mean, depens on your p perspective. you can look at it as herding cats or say, a handful of conservatives can make this package fiscally responsible. there is leverage for conservatives and it is a good thing, i want what is best for country, i want tax cuts and spending cuts, as well. >> steve: yeste

john thune has a big job because he has already said very clearly that he wants to protect the filibuster. he wantsct to require 60 votes r changes in policy. they will have the ability with a simple majority to continue the trump tax cuts for the very wealthy in this country. they will have an opportunity to spend more money on border security which frankly i think will have some bipartisan support in a reconciliation bill that only requires a simple majority. here's the thing we have to remember. what happened four years ago, donald trump did not pay a political price for it. and i know that is awkward and uncomfortable and frankly depressing in many ways but it is true. if you would have asked me four yours ago if donald trump could ever get elected again on this day, i would say no. in facts if you would have asked be many times during the lastme four years if donald trump could get elected again, i would have said no. but the american people by a slim majority said yes, we will give him another shot because we are not happy with the status quo. whether kamala harris liked it or not,

>> well t i think this decision, yes, at odds with senate majority leader john thune who indicated weted a two bill strategy as opposed to doing it in one hefty package. i think most republicans in congress are in agreement with president-elect trump and mike johnson on this because of fears about attempting the two budget bill process that would require additional political capital, whereas with the single bill it's going to allow them through the reconciliation process, this process that allows them to bypass, lawmakers to bypass a 60 vote threshold and makes the lift a little bit easier in terms of unifying a prefractious party as opposed to corralling people around two separate bills. the flip side is that some of donald trump's priorities are going to have to be kicked down the road a little later than people would like. there were people in the future trump administration, people like stephen miller who were advocating for the two-pronged approach so that they could get things like border security, energy done off the bat and fulfill some campaign promises. but again there were
