john torres. let's talk with this experimental vaccine in south africa. how hopeful should we be?very hopeful for this one because what that trial is doing, it is basically taking a vaccine trial that they did in 2009 in thailand, and that trial only had 30% effectiveness, meaning it only protected 30% of the people against hiv, so they said it wasn't effective enough, we can't release it to the public yet. let's get one that is better. so they piggybacked on thatten one, did more research and ended up producing this one saying let's put it out there, try it in south africa where we know there is a high prevalence of hiv. it's working great in monkeys. >> when it comes to vaccines, is it all or nothing, is there a scenario where a vaccine can be even moderately effective perhaps? >> i think that is the big misconception. there is no such thing as a 100% effective vaccine. the flu vaccine, measles, any about of those. they get you up to a certain percentage. 70% to 90% is what we usually look for. for this one, researchers say if we can get 50% to 65%, they will consider that a suc

john torres, who has experience in antarctic rescues. he's 86 years old, will turn 87 on january 20th. retired from nasa in 1971. now has flown to new zealand. we don't know his condition. they say it is stable. how complicated is it to rescue someone from the south pole? >> it's extremely complicated. i did this a couple times when i was stationed at the south pole with the air force. what essentially happens is you're at mcmurdo, on the coast, sea level. most people don't realize the south pole is above 9,000 feet in altitude. when people get there, number one, there's not a whole lot of f facilities, a lot lot of medical condition. most of the evacuations i did were because of high altitude pulmonary edema, the same thing mountain climbers get. they take them to new zealand, which seems to be what happened here. >> thank you very much. yes just know john kerry was just down there, the secretary of state, the first to visit the south pole. it is a very difficult challenge, especially for someone of his age. thank you, doctor. >>> comin
