john torres, don't be a hero, i think good advice for a lot of folks. >> thank you. >> you bet. >>> early heating up. we'll take you live to the ground. >>> first an update on a school shooting in st. louis where the gunman was killed today. kathy park has more. >> the school day was getting under way today, and officials say after they received calls of an active shooter, officers were on campus in a matter of minutes and exchanged gunfire with the suspect armed with a long gun and he was injured and later died at the hospital. police say the gunman was a man around 20 years old and his identity has not been released. right now it is unclear how he was connected with the school and how he got inside the building which was locked. at least two others were killed and several others were wounded in the shooting, when students heard gunfire, they thought it was a drill, and they quickly realized it wasn't. stories of survival are starting to emerge including one student who said he escaped by jumping out the window. we'll keep a close eye on the story, as it develops. we'll be right back. ip

john torres and our medical reporter erica edwards.t's the concern about flu and covid cases rising at the same time now, erica? >> reporter: yeah, hi, aaron and cape. right now it's really about kids who were hit with the viruses hitting at the same time. we're talking about flu and rsv and other respiratory viruses that cause thins like croup all converging at the same time. young children were born at a time when we were in a pandemic and they were cocooned in their homes hand not exposed to these other viruses to help boost their immune systems. they have teeny tiny airways which makes it harder to breathe when they come down with some of these viruses. you know in, fact doctors are tell me that these viruses are hitting earlier than they would normally see making them worried about what's to come in the next week or month. kate, aaron? >> erika, thank you. let me turn to dr. john here. how do we tell these three different illnesses apart especially for parents? >> it's tricky which is why we have tests as doctors. a couple of thin

john torres joins us now. we've been talking about hospital beds on the east coast filling up, now seeing that on the west coast. i want to show the numbers. arizona, 87% of pediatric beds are being used. in texas, 91%. seattle children's hospital says they're at 200% capacity in their emergency room. what do those numbers mean for those hospitals? >> reporter: the hospitals are getting stretched thin and reach out to other hospitals and start putting patients in those areas. typically a hospital's icu, especially pediatric, they don't like to get much more than 85% of their beds filled because that gives them that buffer zone, that 15% capacity in case they need them for emergencies or traumas. in this case, as you mentioned, some of these are filled beyond capacity and sometimes even double capacity. in cases like that, they do a couple things, one, they get children out to other community hospitals and get them to take care of them, and they also try to bring in more help. that obviously drains the faciliti

john torres about what to expect. for the latest, we turn to blaine alexander in atlanta for us. a lot of people are dealing with this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the cdc is warning that flu cases are on the rise across much of the country. perhaps most notably right here in the south. experts say the concern and what's really different about this is that we're seeing flu cases rising earlier in the season than we typically do. and that could certainly mean a lot winter ahead.

john torres. gabe, i'll go to you first. you're outside a hospital here in new york city now. i know you were up in connecticut at a hospital there where cases are really overwhelming. what challenges are you hearing about? >> reporter: hi there, kate. yes, hospitals in connecticut are dealing with what some are calling an unprecedented rise in rsv cases. we were at the yale new haven children's hospital where that one in particular basically had its pediatric icu completely full, every bed filled. 90% of the beds filled with patients with respiratory illnesses and we spoke with some of those health care workers there about what they've been seeing and they tell us this is something they've been working there for 10, 15 years and have never seen something like this. take a listen. have you ever seen numbers like this before? >> definitely not as high as we've been seeing them now, and i would also say from over the years the acuity and how sick the kids are is much higher than much in the past. >> reporter: and that's one hospital in connecticut. another one, connecticut child
