john torres, don't be a hero, i think good advice for a lot of folks. >> thank you. >> you bet. >>> early heating up. we'll take you live to the ground. >>> first an update on a school shooting in st. louis where the gunman was killed today. kathy park has more. >> the school day was getting under way today, and officials say after they received calls of an active shooter, officers were on campus in a matter of minutes and exchanged gunfire with the suspect armed with a long gun and he was injured and later died at the hospital. police say the gunman was a man around 20 years old and his identity has not been released. right now it is unclear how he was connected with the school and how he got inside the building which was locked. at least two others were killed and several others were wounded in the shooting, when students heard gunfire, they thought it was a drill, and they quickly realized it wasn't. stories of survival are starting to emerge including one student who said he escaped by jumping out the window. we'll keep a close eye on the story, as it develops. we'll be right back. ip

john torres joins us now. we've been talking about hospital beds on the east coast filling up, now seeing that on the west coast. i want to show the numbers. arizona, 87% of pediatric beds are being used. in texas, 91%. seattle children's hospital says they're at 200% capacity in their emergency room. what do those numbers mean for those hospitals? >> reporter: the hospitals are getting stretched thin and reach out to other hospitals and start putting patients in those areas. typically a hospital's icu, especially pediatric, they don't like to get much more than 85% of their beds filled because that gives them that buffer zone, that 15% capacity in case they need them for emergencies or traumas. in this case, as you mentioned, some of these are filled beyond capacity and sometimes even double capacity. in cases like that, they do a couple things, one, they get children out to other community hospitals and get them to take care of them, and they also try to bring in more help. that obviously drains the faciliti
