i want to bring in john turner, national security analyst who also happens to teach at michigan statel happened so quickly, so quickly. we're talking about things that have only happened 20, 30 minutes ago at this point. are you catching any wind of this on campus? >> well, campus is on lockdown right now, john. but what i can tell you is, i'm living about a mile and a half away from the campus here at michigan state university. and lake lansing road, where john has reported that there has been an encounter, about half a mile away from my house. while i can't confirm the details that john has, but what i can tell you is that in the last laugh how or half hour or so, there have been a number of helicopters in the sky, in the area above my house, and in the area towards lake lansing road. so, that would seem probably that something is happening there. on campus right now, i know that we still have several students who are students, faculty members, staff who are in lockdown there. and what we are seeing happen on campus right now is information is going out internally to everyone who is

. >> john: in terms of protecting our sovereignty, we did not shoot down the balloon until it had pretty much exited american air space, just barely in american waters. congressman mike turner, your colleague there, likened this to taking out the quarterback after the game was already over. what did we prove about not tolerating a violation of american sovereignty by shooting it down after it had already transited the continental united states? >> as soon as the president was made aware, we took a lot of measures as you know to protect our most sensitive information, to make sure that was not taking place at any place that the balloon was traversing, and they made a conclusion that there was no sensitive information that was being compromised beyond what china had from the satellites. but the point is when the president had to make that decision, the balloon was already over the united states land, and he had to weigh the risk of hurting americans, hurting communities with the imperative of taking it down. now in the future, i believe we need to take the balloon down if it ever happens again before it gets to alaska or the united states. it's happened too many times in the

turner, and cnn's juliette kayyem. thank you all for being with us. let's start with, you shimon. bring us up to speed. what did we know about how this all played out? >> john hours or so, around, as you said, 20 after eight, there was a first call of shots fired and what we've learned from police is that they went from that one location at one of the areas, berkey, that building that the gunmen then went to a second building a union hall where he shot and killed one victim, two others were killed at berkey. so, that is three dead. and then, five are in the hospital. some are with life-threatening injuries. and then, after the incident, police, a short time after that released a photo of who they believed was a con man. and then, sometime after that is when they encountered him, the police officers encountered him and the gunman shot himself according to police so now the whole thing is underway to try and identify him, to try and figure out exactly who he is, and he has, whether he has any affiliation to the campus. so that's the work that is underway now by authorities as they try and figure out motive, any affiliation, or any other information. police at
