"she had a footprint on the fire department being the first female firefighter in sioux city and she set a standard for everybody else that came on," said mark roth, a lieutenant with the sioux city fire department. vakulskas joined the fire department in 1985, a career she dedicated her life to for 22 years. while a fire engine was parked outside during her funeral mass, firefighters sat together in the corner of the church. it was a reflection of the brotherhood she was accepted into. "she was just very compassionate," said sioux city fire chief tom everett. "she had a unique ability to be able to connect with people and really make them comfortable in some of the worst situations that they'd ever experience." those who knew vakulskas say her greatest accomplishment was her three sons.
