john vause on the scene for us in gaza. meanwhile, some shocking video surfaced that purports to show hamas fighter using a tunnel to attack israeli troops. at least five israeli soldiers were killed. our martin savidge has the disturbing details. >> reporter: there was no way that cnn can authenticate the hamas video. for instance, hamas shows this video, claims it show s an attak on israeli soldiers. israel confirms there was an attack. israel says five of its soldiers were killed in the attack. hamas says it actually killed ten. the issue of tunnels has become more of a justification for the ongoing military operation by israel in gaza than even the threat of rockets. the rocket threat has pretty much been knocked down as a result of the success of iron dome. but the idea of tunnels, in other words, the concept a terrorist could pop up in an israeli home, that really scares people here. whether it's real or not. so many israelis are very heavily backing the ongoing conflict. over 80% of israelis still support what is hap

we're going straight to correspondent john vause. he joins us from jerusalem. , the day is breaking and the ceasefire will take effect very shortly. what is the feeling? will it hold? >> well, don, keep in mind they agreed to a two-hour humanitarian ceasefire last sunday. that didn't even last an hour before it was violated and both sides blame the other for breaking that deal. one problem in all this, the idf says its troops will remain in gaza -- >> that was john vause reporting from jerusalem about the ceasefire that they agreed upon for just a few hours. and it should start in just a little bit. and of course there has been fighting there obviously for weeks now that we have been covering here on cnn. john vause back now with us from jerusalem reporting on that ceasefire. john, you said the last one. this one is supposed to be 12 hours. the last one was two hours. it barely lasted an hour. go ahead. >> yeah so, the other problems with the 12-hour window is the idf says the troops will continue to operate in gaza, looking for tunnels, the hamas tunnels, and w

. >> john vause is live with us. john?> hey, christine, here in gaza city, it was explosion after explosion, well into the night and early morning. the last hour or so, a number of buildings right here hit by israeli air strikes. and another building behind me hit again. we don't know exactly why they were hit but what could be an ominous sign, the israelis did drop these leaflets once again, warning residents in this area to get to safety, wherever that may be, we don't know, because there will be further military operations in this area. israel says overnight it hit about 75 targets including five mosques which are housing wednesday and also concealing entrances to those hamas tunnels. israelis have also been hitting command and control centers for hamas. you mentioned that u.n. school. yet again, the idf, the israeli defense forces investigating an incident at a u.n.-run school. its rallies say they don't know what happened. and then around 4:30 local time, just a few hours ago, at least 19 people were killed. many peop

i'm john vause live in jerusalem. and since this latest outbreak of violence between israel and hamas, there's been a wave of anti-war protests around the world. most have been peaceful, but some have turned violent, unleashing a wave of anti-semitism, which is, in this report, on the rise around the world. >> reporter: in the suburbs of paris, there are scars of violence directed toward the jewish community here. last week, it became the flash point for anger against israel. synagogues burned and looted. this man is afraid to show his face on camera because of fear of reprisal against his family. my little brothers don't go out alone, he tells me. they don't go out alone to buy a baguette. i asked whether he's seen many jews leaving france because of the violence. my aunt returned to israel this summer, he says, and she's made the right decision, because only a few days later, the violence erupted. it makes us think we ought to leave, and i think that's what's going to happen. migration to france from israel are at l

john vause in paris, because he was on that flight. lieutenant general spider marks, tim clemente and joining us from los angeles our national correspondent sara sidener who has been reporting on planes equipped with missile technology. sara, let me start with you. el al is still flying from the united states. a flight departed from where you are at l.a.x. are they taking the risk of attack on or does el al have defenses against these kinds of things? >> look, what you are hearing from el al is we're going to continue to fly this direct flight to and from l.a.x. and other airports to tel aviv. when you consider the threat remember that this region is often in this kind of crisis. i was there in 2012 when israel said hey we've just for the first time been hit with a long range surface-to-surface missile from gaza. hamas has those rockets. they know that now. if you're hearing from israeli officials -- and i've talked to them of them. and those who look at the dangers out there and they're saying they'll be the first to decide, you know

that's a building not far from our location here, obviously. >> that was john vause earlier a few hoursjoining us live from gaza. tell us what it was like, john, to go through that awful experience because it was obviously very scary, very dramatic. >> reporter: yeah. indeed. it was very close to the office here in gaza city that we've been operating out of. it turns out that the strike in the building just to my right, that actually was just what they call a knock on the roof, a warning for the people inside that there was, in pacfact, qui possibly an air strike that was yet to come and that never happened and there were a couple of those knocks on the roof, buildings where we are. we've also learned a lot more about the end result of at least one of those air strikes. what happened here today was israel had essentially announced what was a nun lateral cease-fire for four hours and a humanitarian window. they said they would respond if hamas continued to fire upon israeli soldiers and continued to fire the rockets into israel. hamas never agreed to the cease-fire. they fired 26 rockets

and a lot of those people really don't have anywhere to go. >> john vause, thank you so much. let's stay on this. let me bring in cnn international anchor, jim clancy, you have done extensive reporting on this part of the world. i want to get to john's point in a minute as far as they don't have anywhere to go. they're stuck right there in gaza by land and by water. first, as far as the cease-fire is concerned, supposed to last four hours, bearable lasted three. what do you think is going on? >> well, hamas would never subscribe to it. the israelis saw, you know, the shock over that attack, the killing of all of those people, what, more than 20 dead, more than -- well over 100 wounded at that u.n. shelter. >> yeah. >> they called an immediate humanitarian cease-fire, calm things down a little bit. hamas sees itself as winning there. and so hamas says -- >> winning what? >> a propaganda war. winning a propaganda war, so hamas says no cease-fire. they kept firing rockets. the humanitarian cease-fire didn't affect the entire gaza strip. israel quickly reengaged. we are now in a si

let's turn right away to cnn's john vause who is reporting from gaza tonight. john? >> reporter: don, israel's military offensive is about to enter its 24th day, the longest ever and one of the deadliest attacks happened here on wednesday at a marketplace not far from downtown gaza city. what we understand is israel had announced this four-hour humanitarian window when they would hold their fire if hamas stop firing the rockets. hamas never agreed. they continued to fire 26 rockets in just over two hours. then israel decided to respond with a number of quick airstrikes. and it seems that that marketplace not far from us here was hit maybe three times. that's according to witnesses, and there is video from the scene which is very graphic, very zurich. we're to be show to it you now. some viewers will find this upsetting. what it shows, ambulances rushing to the scene as well as others coming out to try to help the wounded, evacuate them from that area. and then another blast quickly followed by what appears to be a third explosion. these graphic images were broadcast

. >> cnn's john vause joins us now from jerusalem. , does it look like that this will, i guess, be transitioned into a seven-day cease-fire? >> reporter: well, look, the problem for the israeli players if you like, are the tunnels. and any longer cease-fire, longer than 12 hours does not include a provision for the israeli military to continue to work and destroy and find that tunnel network which hamas has dug under gaza city. i think it's pretty much going to be a nonstarter. if you look at the cease-fire in place. the air strikes have stopped. the shells has stopped. the navy has backed off from the coast but the soldiers are still on the ground and they're still there searching and destroying those tunnels. the bottom line, as far as the israelis are concerned you can build a war to stop the suicide bombers, the iron dome, it's a defense system to destroy the rockets but you've got to have soldiers on the ground and israelis say they're kind of halfway through that and they want to finish the job. >> of course, the israeli cabinet

i want to go to john vause in gaza. there's activity right now. john, what are you seeing?at we're hearing right now, wolf. drone activity in the skies and some very loud explosions, especially in the east, an area which is being flattened by israeli forces over the last 24 days or so. but we've also put that question to the hamas spokesperson about the question of whether israel still be allowed to continue to look for and destroy those tunnels which has been a key demand of the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. not a direct answer coming from the hamas spokesperson. only saying that this cease-fire is a mutual agreement. hamas has committed to it providing the other party is committed to it. so that still seems to many kind of like an open question. >> yeah. and what worries me and i hope i'm wrong, there's still silence coming from the israeli government. no official statement yet even though it's been an hour or so since the secretary-general of the united nations, the secretary of state of the united states issued a joint statement saying all parties have agre

. >> cnn's john vause is watching the administration for us in jerusalem. we know secretary of state john kerry was leading this effort over the week end to get both sides to agree to a cease-fire. what is the resumption of fighting doing now to those efforts? >> well, clearly not a good sign for the diplomatic efforts here and it seems that right now neither hamas nor the israelis are really ready to compromise on their key demands for an end to this conflict. and the problem we had with that meeting in paris on saturday with john kerry, the secretary of state, there were foreign ministers from six other countries attending but not one israeli, not one palestinian turned up. they weren't invited so it seems unlikely there was ever going to be a cease-fire deal which came out of that. and it does seem that the long they are goes on the more both sides dig in, the more they are unwilling to compromise and the hardier it becomes to find some kind of diplomatic solution. it will end. i guess the question is when and how. christi? >> john, if i want to ask you a

john vause has more. he's joining me live now from jerusalem. john, israel pushed back hard saying that this flight ban was essentially handing hamas a victory. as you said, they must be quite relieved but i guess now it comes to whether or not these airlines will choose to fly this path. >> i guess it's a question of when now they decide that it's safe enough for these carriers to land at ben-gurion airport with the faa now lifting that ban, clearly a lot of airlines will resume those flights. the timing, though, is the issue you did mention this will be a great relief for the israelis. in fact, they have raised this with john kerry, the u.s. secretary of state when he was here, they're very concerned that ben-gurion airport may in fact be closed down but for a handful of carriers and this faa ban in place only 22 carriers had been landing at the tel aviv airport this was a big issue, 90% of these people coming in and out of this country, they do it via ben-gurion airport. now that that ban has been lifted it was under review, it was apparently

our own john vause joins us now live from gaza. it was really the humanitarian window that never was to some degree. who violated this cease-fire? because a short time ago, we had the spokesman for the israeli government say that it was israel who stopped the cease-fire. i want to just before i come to your question play this comment from him. >> the trouble is hamas rejected it. and then continued to shoot. and a cease-fire means not just israel's cease-fire. a cease-fire means hamas must cease-fire too. if rockets continue to be shot at our cities and so forth, of course that means the cease-fire has become null and void. and so we have restarted operations. but the reason we didn't last the full four hours was hamas would said openly and publicly we reject this cease-fire. that's a pity. we would have preferred it to be the full four hours. >> john, listening to that and you're on the ground, does that mesh with what you've seen there, that israel stopped firing but hamas did not live up to its side of the bargain? >> yeah, look

john vause is out front tonight live in gaza city. that video is hard to watch.e injuries that person sustained, those around who probably lost their lives, the assistant picked up the camera and kept filming. i've been on the scene of what's been happening there. what have you seen? >> reporter: hey, erin, i'm having a little trouble hearing you. let's talk about that video right now. that was the scene earlier today in an area not far from the gaza city, you may have heard of it, it's an area that's been repeatedly hit by israeli air strikes, as well as ground operation i guess for going on about 23, 24 days now as this operation continues. what that video shows is what many witnesses have told us. there were a number of strikes carried owl by israel in fairly quick succession. after the first strike, we're told by the witnesses that residents and ambulance crews rushed to the area, surrounded by warehouses and homes as well as shops. they came out to help the wounded try to evacuate them, and then as we've seen, with that very graphic video, which is very grap

our correspondent john vause went to that area or at least drove around the gaza strip. what can you tell us happened at that school where so many people died, karl? >> he went down there and checked out and, of course, we know un investigators had their own teams there doing crater analysis, looking at shrapnel samples as well. they say they have hard evidence to conclude that israel hit that school three times with artillery. it has really enraged un officials because it says they told the israelis 17 times what the coordinates of that school were. and what is also frustrating them greatly is they say they can do nothing more. bear in mind that 220,000 palestinians are sleeping in united nations shelters tonight. they've fled their homes precisely because their homes were in the middle of a battlefield. and now those shelters are in the middle of a combat zone. the u.n. officials say there's nothing they can do, there is no safe place in gaza according to the united nations, halla. >> carl person hall doing great work along with our team on the ground in very dangerous

our john vause is joining us live. israel is saying as we said an evacuation order was given but u.n. says they never got that order. so what are you hearing? >> reporter: okay, an initial investigation is under way and israelis point out this is how it stands as far as they see it. they say there was fighting. over the last couple of days in that area not far from the school. they did in fact issue this humanitarian window so the school could evacuate and it was between 10 a.m. and 2 so everyone could get out and hamas stopped those people from leaving that school. they also claim that hamas had fired a number of rockets hoping to reach israel but they hit the area and hamas militants opened fire on israeli solders who then returned fire and as we heard, the u.n. spokesperson saying they were, in fact, trying to negotiate safe evacuation for everybody at that school. they tried a number of times but never heard become from the idf, the idf outright rejects that. >> the u.s. secretary of state is in the region, ban ki-
