basically i have been department ethics supervisor in the case of the so-called american taliban john walker lindh he was a first person captured in afghanistan after nine eleven and he was an american and so he was seen as the worst of the bad when in fact he really hadn't done that much he ended up pleading guilty to two relatively minor charges but i have advised not to interrogate him without a lawyer and parent that equate not to torture him and when i realized that that advice was not only because this appeared from the pile in the office that was not turned over to the court i blew the whistle on that and for that i experienced a lot of retaliation including being put under a criminal investigation and referred to the state barzan which had licensed as an attorney and put on the no fly list so that's kind of how i got into this line of work i decided after that experience to dedicate my life to representing was blowers and what was the outcome of that investigation the criminal case closed with no charges ever being brought in maryland bar dismissed at the charges in two thousand and

not directly in that, but one of the guys, the guy, john walker, a marvelous guy, looks like jack pali palins, the movie actor. his job, by a smoke generating company wound up in the san fernando valley out in california. every time there was a rumor the japanese were sending a submarine or bomber fleet, whatever, his guys would send up smoke pots. he brags now he created the first smog in southern california. and this wasn't the later stuff which was done through a machine and sort of white and wasn't really that bad for you. this stuff was oily and it was just -- you know, this would kill you if you breathed it for three day fls a row, probably. kind of like the atmosphere out there, the ozone. but that's the extent to which they were involved. they were involve and the east coast, because at that -- remember, at that point, 1942. roosevelt had gone on the radio saying you can expect to be bombed, because it was true that german planes could reach the eastern part of the united states at that point. from outposts in greenland and so forth. that they expected to lose at any moment. so

walker already owed his attorney law firms at least $55,000. according to his recently filed financial disclosure statement. the john doe investigation was launched almost two years ago. criminal charges have been filed against three aides to scott walker from his time as waukee county executive. the charges include doing campaign work on company time. meanwhile, scott walker is out traveling around the country, state to state, trying to rock star his way to a defense fund. he spent yesterday at the illinois chamber of commerce and another republican event in michigan. walker is selling himself as a guy who stood up to the big government union bosses. and the righties, well, they're out there at these state events, basically eating it up, giving him standing ovations, but it was a different story outside. thousands of pro-union protesters showed up outside walker's event in illinois. hundreds more greeted walker in michigan, protesting his assault on public education. i'm joined tonight by john nichols, washington correspondent of "the nation" magazine and author of the book "uprising." john, what does this mean? ok

i mean we have a lot of great governors, scott walker, and john kasich and others. you said you were doing quietly. care to talk about it. describe it, what motivated that and where you are now with this? >> what we really did we took on the civil service system of government employees. i loved your comment about unseen taxes. if you look -- actually, we have 22 different departments in the state. i asked every one of them after a year, i said what its the biggest thing you can do, get better service at a lower price. every one said the way weep hire. right now you get rewarded for breathing the longest. that's how we, that's how we decide to who we are going to hire, who we are going to promote. who we are going to give raises to. who is going to get laid off when we do that. so we addressed that. and moved, not finally passed. i'm -- hope i am not jinxing myself. pretty certain we will get it done this year. basically do away with civil service system that used -- time served instead of merit to determine how we do things. if you don't think that makes a differenc

bayou mieto and the fall of little rock, the two principle confederate cavalry commanders, marsh walker and johnrmaduke, marmaduke was angry at walker at helena. he didn't feel that walker had supported him in his attack on one of the batteries there. at brownsville the plan had been for marmaduke to lead the union troops into an ambush but walker's men. walker did not follow through there. and then at bayou mieto, walker refused several requests from marmaduke to come up to the firing line from his headquarters in the rear. well, the two generals' staffs started sending notes back and forth. you know, walker saying, now, are you calling me a coward? no, i wasn't calling you a coward, i just didn't want to serve under you. it escalated to the point where finally one of walker's aides sent a note saying general walker demands the satisfaction that is due him as a gentleman. so on the 6th of december, 1863, these two confederate generals, both west pointers, met in a field north of little rock, fought a duel. marmaduke fatally wounded marsh walker, and, you know, all of this, you know, four days b

so, john, in the meantime, scott walker who is up for reelection signs a bill which i understand it notcome on. mr. press, you've got to keep counting. about a week and a half ago, he on a thursday afternoon before easter he signed and allowed to go into effect in sort of a pocket signing policy, a set of bills that is in the view of many women the most aggressive package of anti--women on to use the term war on women legislation that you have seen in just about any state in the country. there is a gutting-out of the oversight and organization for pay equity. there is a gutting out of a great deal of our sex education programs which are actually state-of-the-art, some of the best in the country. they assure that, you know it's age-related and age-based but all the way through, kids got an appropriate amount of sex education. they have restructured all sorts of rules and regulations as regards reproductive rights, reproductive freedoms. for instance, you know an incredible regulations on thurs doctors, kids where a woman might take an abortion. >> margaret, why at this time? i as
