. >> reporter: the conditions around john walker lind's release indicate authorities are concerned about the threat he could pose. he joined the taliban before 9/11 and was with them when al qaeda terrorists attacked the world trade center and the pentagon. he was captured in late 2001 and was present when the taliban launched an attack that killed johnny michael sand, a cia officer interrogating him and other taliban prisoners. he was the first american killed in afghanistan following 9/11. lind got a 20 year prison sentence, he only served 17 years of that. starting today he will be unsupervised release with some restrictions. let's look at those. they include monitoring software on his internet devices, online communication that must be conducted in english and he will go through mental health counseling. he can't view any extremist materials, can't hold a passport and cannot leave the country without permission from the court. >> 20 years and a plea bargain deal. he should get more than that. to let him out, most people who get out will be back into something like that. >> reporter:
