john warner today expressed serious doubts about what you just mentioned, which is that this is a runaway this program has tripled in spending in one week, and this will only help maybe a couple hundred thousand american people. not to say they do not need it, but when you look at health care, we were talking about making a free for 80 million americans -- what will that do to the exploding cost of health care? the costs will keep going up, just like this program. >> i would say it has done well because it is working. looking at sales year over year , is stimulus money to get things going again, and that is what you always hear complaints about. jon: the program has awarded many people for trading in their old cars in exchange for new, fuel-efficient ones, but it does, the cost. we asked you earlier if you think the senate approve those 2 billion extra dollars to extend the program. kevin from colorado rights yes, it is a good idea, it helps the general public, mostly middle- and-lower-class, who need help, the carmakers, and the environment. another says we should not find it because it

john tan, take a look at this picture, newsweek, what is left not to like. joining me now is democratic senator mark warner of virginia and nobody is going to like this bill. it's going to be a big compromised mess with something that everyone can find a dislike in it. how do you pass a bill like that? >> we also have to acknowledge that we're not going to get it totally right the first time. you don't change 17% of our gdp and whole health care system perfectly right the first time. this is going to be a growing process, the consequences of doing nothing. if you happen to lose your health insurance or lose your job. but even if you maintain your health insurance, the status quo -- you're going to sigh your profit double over the next decade with the current system in place. the federal deficit is going to go way over the top and explode the nation if we can't drive our costs down around medicare and medicaid. so whether the concern is around coverage or my concern of covering a financially stable system, with we've got to make sure that we get a reform -- it's not gb to be perfect. chances are we're going

warner: no, it has not. they only had very short brief conversations, president obama and he, and either he or john podesta,ho was with him, the former chief of staff, with the n.s.c. officials. whether it will be on a secure phone call when he gets back to new york or he'll come back here. >> they're certain after very carefully orchestrated this they have not given north korea an edge in larger discussions about nuclear weaponry? >> warner: yeah, they were confident of that. what i'm told is interestingly, the north koreans in the due diligence phase, when they were figuring out, is this for real, were not insisting at all is there be some link. of course they turned around and told their people that president obama had sent a message, which the americans insist is not the case. but, no, i don't think they're worried about that. and they have also taken pains to make sure the other partners in the six-party talks knew of this in advance, understood it is not undercutting the whole nuclear united front they're trying to present in any way. >> so this is not necessarily an opening for everyone to return to

warner. and they're very willing to consider our views. >> let's take some calls. first call up for jim coal and john garrett, new hampshire on the insured line. go ahead . caller: i listened to your interview with mr. lamb last night, and you were very informative. i learned a lot. two years ago my wife had a perforated ulcer in her stomach. she spent two months in i.c.u., four months after that, surgeries later. the bill, the medical bill was a little over a million dollars. my question is, if we didn't have insurance, in your honest opinion, doctor, because i find you an honest guy, in your honest opinion would she have received the same care if we didn't have insurance? mr. coal, chime in after him if you would, please. thank you. >> dr. garrett. >> yeah. i'm glad you asked that question. i can tell you 100% that she would have received exactly the same care. i don't know how to say it any clearer. we do it all the time. million dollars is a lot of money, but i'll tell you as a practicing physician in a hospital, i don't check. i don't know if people have insurance or money or anything and all of
