warner unit with discovery. joining me is david zaslav, and john stankey, the ceo of at&t.orning, and i certainly appreciate it. john, i'm going to start with you and the soon to be most powerful man in the media, stand by, i want to start with a couple of questions of you, john you know, i'm going to use the word bold. i think you have been amazingly bold in ten months or so in the job or maybe a year in the job at this point. it doesn't always mean being bold is being rightm you know, it's less than three years since you closed the warner transaction, it cost your shareholders $107 billion when you include debt in that deal. so why reverse course now? >> david, look, you know, things have changed a bit since we did the transaction, and despite the fact that, you know, we are doing this relatively quickly, shareholders have still done reasonably well with this decision i think when you look at, you know, the cash flows that we generated during that period of time, look at asset sales we've made, and you know, frankly, i have an incredible degree of confidence that david's

it's a question whether some of the assets would want to merge with assets of time warner, like cnn. to see johns so smart about always doing the tax-free deals, at&t is till going to own 71% of the new company but david zaslav is going to be running things. it seems like a clear sign that at&t is saying, you guys run it, you figure it out. you're going to find ways to pour a lot more into the content for direct-to-consumer, at&t gets the benefit of those things watching zaslav run this, watching the discovery people come together and putting more money into global content and that social structure, it will be something to see. >> right >> andrew, your newspaper points out in this piece not too long, zaslav doesn't seem to be that enthralled in the news business. it's overcooked. therefore, discovery wouldn't be interested in cnn. i wonder how does cnn become a crown jewel for discovery. or does it shop around >> i think it does because of the global piece when you really think about some of the global assets that discovery has and the international brand of cnn, i think there's probably an uniq

what to expect from this new media colosses that's going to be created by warner media with discovery the surprising decision by john stanky to say that's it, not only three years after we acquired time warner, now at&t will earn 71% of the large company and it will be a large company. they're talking about as much as $14 billion in adjusted ebitda by 2023. you put a multiple on that and you get to some pretty big numbers, nine, ten times that and you can figure out where things stand if they get what they want. but a big part of what they want, of course, is to expand their reach. scale, that's what they always talk so much about that's what john malone, who will still be an important shareholder here, although will only have one vote for each of his shares, has talked to me for years when we do our annual interview and that's what david zazlof will talk about when it comes to streaming and direct-to-consumer. >> we own the ecosystem. we have a portfolio of content that's very diverse and broadly appealing. we think it would be 200, 300, 400 million homes. >> you really think you could get to 400 million direct-to-
