in the catholic street, often there's also a contrast between these new saints, john xxiii and john paul xxii. conventionally, john xxiii on the left, john paul a hero on the right. i think they were put together as a call to unity. in a sense, we're seeing a festival of unity in rome today. >> a mirror reflection between the two living popes and the two popes that will be sainted. amara, earl? >> john and delia, we're using the words over and over unprecedented and historic. i want to talk to you both about aspects of both canonizations and how they are breaking away from tradition. john, you mentioned that the message is unity, but before we develop more into that, can you give us a sense of what we're going to see from here on out? what will we see in this canonization ceremony that's expected to last about 10 to 20 minutes? >> that's right. well, what will happen is that the vatican official who is in charge of both of the sainthood causes, an italian by the name of angelo amato, three times he will present a formal request to pope francis to declare these two men as saints. and he's doin

. >> two very different men pope john xxii came from a peasant family and always remember his roots. we had john paul ii a great academic a great teacher and really loved people. i think francis wants to bring two popes into our minds who loved people. because if the church doesn't reach people, charlie, it remains irrelevant. and i think pope francis is saying this is what really matters. two popes who loved people and that's why i want the church to go as well. >> rose: how does this pope make those of you who are part of the establishment of the vatican feel? >> it meeks me very excited about the future of the church. and i tell you why, charlie. i think sometimes the church can be simply as an institution. full of bureaucracies, full of institutions, full of buildings. but the church is a living entity. i think that's what someone like st. francis believed in to rebuild my church. he wasn't talking about bricks and mortar about the institution he was talking about rebuilding the lives of people. and that's where the church needs to go. that's why pope john xxiii went, pope john se

i'm healed. >> reporter: the vatican said it was a miracle, leading to pope john paul xxii's. ions will come together to honor two pontiffs who have left an indelible mark on catholicism. these are just the official miracles approved by the vatican but the priest in charge of john paul ii's cause told me he received thousands of miracle stories and you can bet some of those people will be here tomorrow to celebrate their favorite saint. >> they'll all be so excited. we should let our viewers know you and i will be here tomorrow at this time as all of this takes place and unfolds. but one thing i'm curious of is what we can expect to see. pope francis appears very comfortable being accessible to masses of people. kids have jumped up on stage with him during ceremonies before. what can we expect to see tomorrow? >> reporter: well, this is a very formal, solemn vatican occasion. we're going to see the litany of saints, that beautiful procession they do with the chanting, lots of incense. most of it is in latin. so, what we'll be looking for, of course, is if pope francis, as he's

canonization. 1 million people are expected to crowd the streets sunday as pope francis elevates popes john xxiii and xxiist.hood. we have a bit of a satellite delay. ann, what is the controversy around such a festive and spiritual occasion. >> reporter: well, most of the controversy, andrea, surrounds the proclaiming of john paul ii a saint. it is because of his role in the sex abuse crisis. there are people, particularly survivors of sex abuse, who say he did not do enough to stop the problem. some go as far as to say he turned a blind eye on that problem. some say he did do something once he found out about it. but he was not aware of it when the problem started to surface. that is not doing much to placate the survivors who have come here to protest his sainthood. they know they can do nothing about it. it's not like the catholic church will change its mind the next two days. but they say they want people to understand there are people who are hurt by this pope's inaction and are calling on the current pope to fire the bishops who moved priests around who they knew were molesting children. andrea? >>
