we begin with nbc's john yang on the streets. john, what's happening? >> reporter: lester, chicago police are slowly and method methodically clearing the last protesters out of here. about 3,000 people marched here. most left peacefully and quietly. a hard core group of a couple hundred remained, some tried to push their way toward the summit site. there's stick swinging on both sides. protesters threw barricades at the police. >> you are engaging in unlawful conduct. >> reporter: now they're sort of calmly and meticulously clearing them out without much more incident. before this, five people were arrested, allegedly planning violent protests this week. one area where the protesters did appear to have an affect is that they hacked the city's website, the city acknowledged that their website is hacked. the main city website went down. the police department website went down. both are back up and running. lester? >> john yang in chicago. as those clashes continue in the streets tonight, president obama and other world leaders are attending that high stak

our coverage begins tonight with nbc's john yang who is with us from chicago's famous michigan avenue. john, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. the world may have come to chicago, but today it seemed like nobody was here to welcome them. the loop was a virtual ghost town. rush hour a fraction of what it is normally. it had the feel of a sleepy, peaceful day. but yesterday? not so much. the scene was quite different just 24 hours ago as police and protesters clashed two blocks from the nato summit. after a larger peaceful march, a small group tried to crash the meeting, pushing past police lines, throwing buckets and metal barricades. protesters swung sticks, police swung batons. 45 people were arrested, half the three-day total of 90. the head of the police department praised the department's performance. >> asking them to put themselves in harm's way knowing they will get assaulted and stand there and take it? these guys were amazing. >> reporter: by contrast today's smaller march on boeing's headquarters was peaceful and at times festive. it seemed that the only people

we begin with nbc's john yang on the streets. john, what's happening? >> reporter: this is the end of the protest march about three blocks away from the mccormack center where the nato summit is being held. the speeches ended about a half hour ago, but there are a small group of protesters who are not leaving. the police are trying to clear the area. there was also a small group who tried to push toward the summit center. and that led to some clashes with the police, some pushing, shoving, some stick swinging. there have been no arrests so far. so far this weekend, there have been before this, about five people arrested, allegedly for planning a violent protest in this weekend. but so far, only about more than -- a little more than two dozen arrests over the weekend. and the other impact of this is that the city of chicago's website, city officials acknowledge, have been hacked. the city website went down. the police website went down. but so far, right fou, they're trying to clear this area. we'll see how this ends. lester? >> john yang in chicago. as

we want to bring in john yang who's outside a police station where demonstrators are still being released. many of them arrested late last night. expecting large crowds today, john? >> reporter: jeff, the main focus today is going to be boeing corporate headquarters in downtown chicago. boeing, a big defense contractor, high on the list that's issued every year of big corporations that pay little or no federal taxes. it's going to be a big target today. boeing has put a protective material on the windows of their skyscraper in downtown chicago. and they have urged employees, they say they'll be open for business but they've urged employees to work from home. that's led the protesters to declare victory already saying they have effectively shut down boeing. yesterday, police say they arrested at least 45 people in the protest. they are being released here at the north area headquarters of chicago police department. they're being greeted by fellow protesters who spent the night here outside in solidarity for their colleagues inside. and as they come out, they're talking to us about their ex

john yang is live for us in chicago. it has been a tough couple days.ow have the chicago police handled it, and what is the damage so far? >> well so far i think the police are getting fairly high marks. they are doing now over at boeing headquarters just over there a few blocks, doing what they've done all weekend essentially. they are letting the protesters do their thing, according to nbc news producer stephanie himango is on the scene right now. 200 or a couple hundred protesters sitting in the front of headquarters singing songs. there's silly string and ca zoos and glitter all over the place. they're letting them play this out. the police clearly set limits but they let the protesters play things out. yesterday, one of the limits they set was they didn't want anyone breaching their barrier to go toward mccormick place. that's when the clashes occurred and when you saw the protesters and the police come together, some batons swung by the police. sticks swung, garbage pails thrown by the protesters. police superintendent gary mccarthy says they only

meantime, nbc's john yang joins us live. the protest not the lead story. it is about afghanistan. >> that's exactly right. the nato summit issued their declaration of the chicago summit. committing themselves to wind down the military involvement in afghanistan by mid 2013. the middle of next year with the idea of allowing at that point, putting the afghan troops in the front. letting them take the lead. letting the nato troops focus on supporting them. on assisting them and on training them with the goal of having a complete withdrawal of nato military forces by the end of 2014. and be just in the united states, as there's a lot of war weariness but a lot of the other nato countries. france, germany, great britain, a lot of these leaders for political reasons at home want to show that there is an end in sight to the afghan war. the declaration that is coming out of this summit today will certainly point that way, tamron. >> all right. john yang for us in chicago. 4:30 eastern time, the president will hold that news conference. we'll bring it to you live.

nbc's john yang is in chicago. you are very close by to this. tell us what you are seeing. >> we're about a block away from sort of the heart of this confrontation. it really is more of a standoff right now than a confrontation. the police have stopped pushing the protesters forward or back from the mccormack place. we can see actually a new, fresh unit of chicago police arriving. they do have helmets on. their shields are up for the most part. they are wearing flak jackets. there is also a large number of illinois state police in riot gear. they have ear protection on. there's sort of an acoustic device that police use to blast noise at protesters to try to clear them away. what the police are trying to do is clear this area. the main protest rally ended maybe about an hour ago. there were about 2,000 to 3,000 people involved in that. most of them have left peacefully. however, this hard-core group of a couple hundred are refusing to leave. some sitting down in the streets. some actually started at one point pushing toward mccormick place, prov
