john yang begins our coverage in bellfont, pennsylvania. good evening, john. >> reporter: good evening lester. for many of those victims it was an emotional moment. they had come to the courthouse to tell in public, their stories of embarrassment and shame. for sandusky it meant the label of convicted child molester. >> anything to say, sir? >> reporter: he looked stunned and confused as he was led away in handcuffs. to the county jail where he segregated from the general population. >> rot in hell ex! moments before he had listened as the jury foreman declared him guilty in 45 of 48 child sex abuse charges. sandusky kept his eyes on the jury. his wife dorothy looked straight ahead. kara, one of their six adopted children dropped her head and cried. prosecution evoked a position to revoke bail. >> it was tense and quiet. >> reporter: another spectator was victim six who testified how sandusky gave him a naked bear hug in the shower. after the verdict was read, he leaned forward sobbing. >> when you say i believe you, it is common that people

brian. >> john yang covering at the courthouse in pennsylvania. thanks. savannah guthrie, our chief legal correspondent is here with us in the studio. savannah, watching this, it looks relentless, the evidence against this man. as a lawyer, though, you were cautioning us earlier today. what should we think about this? >> a couple of things, none of is watching tonight, sitting at home has actually witnessed the actual testimony in this case. this case will rise and fall on whether or not those accusers were credible in court. only the jurors can really size that up and make that decision. i think the fundamental difficulty for the defense here is the sheer volume of witnesses in the prosecution case. you could explain away any one alleged victim. you could say there are factual inconsistencies or maybe there's a money motive. but how do you explain ten alleged victims. that's why so many people look at this case and think it's almost insurmountable for the defense. >> we will watch as it develops, as it goes to the jury with the defense resting today. sav

nbc's john yang is in bellefonte, pennsylvania. fair warning to our viewers, this trial got off to a start. john, good evening. >>> good evening, brian, seven months after this scandal brought down a university president and a legendary college head football coach, jerry sandusky who maintains his innocence in the face of 52 charges of sexual abuse finally today faced his accusers in court. the first witness, identified in court documents as victim 4 said he was a 90-pound teenager when the abuse began. he described how showers with sandusky and the penn state coaches locker room went from horsing around to hugging and caressing to oral sex. now, 28, he testified that the abuse went on for about five years. he became emotional when he was questioned by the defense. >> he said under cross-examination he regretted not coming forward earlier because he felt girlty that maybe he was responsible for these other victims have been molested. >> reporter: throughout the testimony, sandusky and the jury of seven women and five men seemed to p

our report from nbc's john yang. >> reporter: mike mcqueary was a graduate assistant at penn state in february 2001 when he headed to a small staff locker room one friday night. as he entered, he testified he heard smacking sounds, rounding the corner, he said he saw jerry sandusky and a boy he guessed was about 10 or 12 in the shower, engaged in behavior mcqueary called sexual, wrong, perverse. sandusky faces 52 related charges and has pled not guilty to all of them. mcqueary said he reported the incident to head coach joe paterno, but he was blocked from saying what paterno told him because it would be hearsay. paterno died in january. mcqueary said he never told police, because he had discussed the matter with university vice president gary shultz who was responsible for the campus police. earlier the jury heard a halting and hesitant 18-year-old known in court documents as victim one. he told of meeting sandusky through his second mile charity, and described how sandusky went from kissing him on the forehead to oral sex when he was 12 years old. i didn't know what to do, he said,

john yang has the story. >> reporter: dottie sandusky, jerry sandusky's wife of 45 years spoke out for the first time since her husband's arrest appearing as a defense witness. under questioning from defense attorney joseph amendola she said she never saw her husband behave inappropriately with any of the eight men who have accused him of sexually assaulting them when they were young boys. sounding nervous and often pausing before answering, she said she never heard a boy cry out for help. a reference to the man known in court documents as victim 9 who told the jury he called out while being assaulted in the sandusky's basement. sandusky pleaded not guilty to more than 50 related charges. in cross-examination by prosecutor joseph mcgettigan she gave her memories of the boys now her husband's accusers. victim 4, he had his problems. he was very demanding. victim 1, very clinging to jerry. victim 9, he was a charmer, he knew what to say, when to say it. mcgettigan asked if she knew any reason any of them plus former coach mike mcqueary who testified he saw sandusky in a shower room with

>> john yang, thank you. now let me bring in veteran prosecutor kathleen kane, a candidate for attorney general in the state of pennsylvania where this trial is taking place. thank you for joining us again. as john yang just reported, another young man telling a story very similar and if true, as heartbreaking as the others that we heard yesterday. they are piling on. how does the defense fight back against this? >> the defense is going to have to try and pull each witness's testimony one by one back off of their conspiracy theory that everyone got together and they're going to have to do the best job that they can just to pick out inconsistencies. it sounds like that the prosecution is having blockbuster days, that the witnesses are strong and the witnesses are coming across to the jury as very credible. >> you point out that they will have to find inconsistencies in these stories here. but one of the boys, for example, today says the incidents happened in 1990 and 1999. the stories tell a similar pattern. o

john yang is live at the white house in bellefonte with the latest. let's talk about this morning and the testimony that we're hearing so far from victim number one. how does it match up comparing, contrasting with what we heard yesterday from victim number four? >> reporter: in terms of the details, thomas, in terms of the pattern that the prosecution is trying to prove, we're trying to show the jury, it was very much the same. talked about how they met through the second mile program, talked about how sandusky gave this young man gifts, and then sort of escalated the contact from -- from slight physical contact to more intimate contact, to sexual activity. but in terms of emotion, these two witnesses could not have been more different. yesterday, victim four was very calm, very straight forward in telling his story. today, victim one who is now 18. so these stories or this incident is much fresher to him. was very emotional. sobbed through his testimony. had very halting, very emotional, had to take deep breaths before he began to tell the details of

jurors continue deliberating tonight and nbc's john yang is at the courthouse. john? >> reporter: lester, good evening. the jury has been deliberating for more than 12 hours now. they've sent out at least two notes from the jury room. first they wanted to hear again the testimony of mike mcqueary. he is the former assistant football coach who said he saw sandusky in the shower in the locker room with the young boy known in court documents as victim two. they also had a legal question about some hearsay testimony involving victim eight. sandusky right now is at home waiting with his family for the verdict. his attorney has been here in the courtroom talking to reporters. his attorney is known for speaking bluntly and has said he would die of a heart attack from shock if his client was acquitted of all charges. the jury seems to be settling in for another late night tonight. if there is no verdict tonight, they will continue deliberations tomorrow. lester? >> thanks. nbc's chief legal correspondent savannah guthrie has been watching this case with us as well. there's a

nbc's john yang is live outside the courthouse for us in bellfont.nder way today? >> reporter: so far we've heard from the prosecution. they delivered their opening statement. for 52 minutes, the prosecutor walked through the case against jerry sandusky. the 52 counts of sexual abuse, of sexual misconduct against ten young boys. and to personalize them, he said that so far these alleged victims have been known add victim number 1, victim number 2, victim number 3. he showed photographs of eight of the victims, the eight known victims, the eight alleged victims who are expected to testify against sandusky and referred to them by their first names, told their stories. and he showed photographs of them as children, at the time the alleged abuse took place. this is an attempt to personalize them as young people, not the young adults the jury is going to see when they take the stand and testify in court. they will be named in court. however, it is nbc news policy not to name the alleged victims of sexual crimes. so we will not be naming them unless they g

nbc's john yang joins me now from bellefonte, pennsylvania.xplain what we're seeing from inside that courtroom today. >> reporter: well, right now, thomas, as you said, they did, the defense called, the two lead investigators in the investigation of jerry sandusky that led to the charges late last year. and what they wanted to do is, this is the first time in the defense presentation we see them sort of chip away at one of the prosecution witnesses. they wanted to ask these two investigators if they ever in their interviews with victim four, the man known at victim four in court documents, the first witness of this trial, whether they ever told him details of what other victims with other accusers had told the investigators. at first they said, no. they didn't share any details with the people they interviewed, but then the defense produced a transcript of a tape recording of that interview in which one of the investigators did tell victim four that others told similar stories, that others had told a similar story, a similar progression, was t

. >> nbc's john yang reporting from bellefonte, pennsylvania, thanks so much. me from boston, former prosecutor wendy murphy and the founder of the victim advocacy and research group. wendy, great to have you here. according to the national institutes for health, because i want more of the personality disorder and what they're talking about as john reports will come up in court, so this disorder is a condition where people react in a very emotional or dramatic way that draws attention to themselves. in your attention, how do you think sandusky's lawyers intend to make that defense work given the severity of the charges in this case? >> well, i think the short answer is it's not going to work, thomas. you know, the point that you made that this is a recent contrivance i think is going to immediately cause the jury to be at least dubious about it. in addition, you know, they're really suggesting this is a guy sending love letters to his victims wasn't necessarily abusing them but was ill, in order to have a disorder like this, you really have to behave like that
