john yang, nbc news. albuquerque, new mexico. >>> there's late word tonight the u.s. military is getting more deeply involved in the effort to find hundreds of nigerian schoolgirls more than five weeks after they were kidnapped by terrorists. nbc's correspondent jim miklaszewski has more. jim? >> 80 u.s. military forces are already on the ground in chad. their mission, fly an unmanned drone over neighboring nigeria in a desperate search for those missing girls. all the americans are combat armed for protection, but officials here stress they will not be involved in any combat operations or even any possible rescue missions in nigeria. the predator at another u.s. drone, the global hawk, have been flying surveillance missions over the dense jungles of nigeria since last week but have so far found no signs of the missing girls. defense officials tell us that the terrorist group holding the girls, boko haram, has now split them up into many smaller groups and scattered them throughout the jungle. and in a somewhat somber assessment tonight, one senior defense official te

joining me now is john yang who's spearheading the effort. see you, john. >> great to be here. >> when you say the core values of the republican party align with the core values of asian americans, what do you mean? >> well, asian americans believe in a strong work ethic and merit, they value education and the family and believe in entrepreneurship. that sounds like republican values. >> the interesting thing is when you look at how the voting worked out in the last 8 to 12 years, you see that it's been growing, that asian americans that be voting for the democratic presidential candidate. why? >> well, there are a couple of reasons. i think first and foremost, we haven't paid enough attention to them. so being there is quite important. we need to go after them in the way that speaks to their values, that speaks frankly to the way they think. after just effort, the other things we need to focus on are things we believe in that agrees with where they are. >> the other thing is getting them out to the polls. i was fascinated by these numbers. t

a retired air force colonel told abc's john yang that she waited two months before she can get treated for breast cancer and she knew getting treated early could make a big difference and she left the va system. >> his answer was to call the president and he hung up on me. >> because i didn't get a response and didn't seem to cari really wasn't comfortable going there. >> so i wonder at this point does congress and the white house have to try something new, malika? how do they wrap their arms around this? >> i think they started the process of doing that and the president started getting a blow back from folks in his own party and that's something that you have to look at to see if there is a more growing chorus of democratses who are calling for shinseki to step aside and the the president seemed to hint that that could be a possibility if he comes back with a report that the president finds unsatisfactory. i do think that we'll also see conversations about the va. i think we flashback 10, 20 years we could have the same conversations. the president who has campaigned on veterans care
