john yang joins me live from centennial, colorado.mental state, front and center with that insanity plea. what can we expect from lawyers on both sides as the dwepsefense tries to save his life? >> we're going to hear what's in those two psychiatric evaluations. the first one was done prosecution had problems with him and said there was bias and objected to it. they asked for a second and we're going to hear for first time the details of those evaluations in the trial now and probably even in the opening statements coming up now. the challenge to the defense is to prove that he was insane that he was -- that he was not libel or not responsibility for his behaviors, not only in the shooting but in all of the preparations you talked about. assembling the ammunition the tear gas canisters and tactical gear the booby trapping his apartment. legal analysts say that's going to be a tough hill to climb for the defense. the prosecution is going to use that all of that preparation to say this was a calculated act of anger and revenge. so that'

john yang is live outside the courthouse in centennial, colorado. al pre-trial conference going on. as you say the opening arguments will be in few hours. this isn't so much a who done it as what made him do it. the question is what made him do it, the defense says it was an act of insanity it was a psychotic break. the prosecution says it was a calculated act of revenge and anger and to prove their point, the point to bolster their point, they pointed out what the planning went into this the amount of ammunition he amassed, the plans he made about the attack in the theater, booby trapping his apartment, and legal analysts say that's going to be the toughest obstacle for the defense as they bleed not guilty by reason of insanity. they have to convince the jurors that not only was he insane when he committed the crime, but he was insane when he took all those steps leading up to the crime. legal analysts say it would be different if he just stood up in the theater and started shooting but because he did these steps leading up to it it raises the chall

first i want to bring in two nbc news correspondent its, john yang at the white house and our tehran tration with what they have gotten out of this agreement? >> reporter: around here they say they're pretty satisfied. they said they did have to make some concessions, they describe them as face-saving concessions for the iranians, but i think what the challenge is that a lot of what they feel good about is very complex, very scientific. it is literally nuclear science they're talking about, the capability of developing nuclear weapons from nuclear material. it's very tough to explain to skeptical lawmakers on capitol hill, including many democrats, so i think what you're going to be hearing a lot is the monitoring system that they say they now -- that this agreement would put into place a strict monitoring system so that they would be able to watch what the iranians are doing. you're going to hear the sort of phrase from the reagan era that this is not based on trust, this is based on verification. dorian. >> now let's go to tehran where aly alee ali aruzzi joins us by phone. talk to

nbc news bureau chief has reaction there from the ground in iran, but first, i want to go to john yangolitics perspective. how is congress receiving the details outlined by the administration? >> if you think the administration had a tough time getting this agreement with iran, they are going to have perhaps even a tougher time preserving it. keeping congress from what the administration fears will be derailing it. in a couple weeks, the senate foreign relations committee is going to take up a bill that would require congressional approval for any final agreement. now the challenge o to the administration, it's probably going to go through because republicans control both houses but the challenge for the administration is to keep enough democrats off the bill so that they don't have a veto-proof majority. why would democrat os pose this? some have concerns about the iranians, whether they will keep their promises. a lot of them are allies of israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, who is against this in a big, big way. there's some who just believe that constitutionally this is not
