nbc's john yang is in fox lake. he joins us with the latest. john, three suspects at large. what can you tell us right now about the hunt for them? >> well, this hunt is still going strong, steve. just about -- less than half a mile up the road this way, i can see flashing lights, a huge police presence. above you can hear the sound of a helicopter hovering over. across the street a staging area. you can see vehicles from several police, sheriffs, state police in the area. all focusing on this little town about 10,000 people of fox river. this all happened about 8:00 this morning. the police officer, as you said, on a foot patrol -- foot chase, rather, after three suspicious people. this hunt still going on, closing in on its tenth hour as they still hunt down these three people. they're still looking for them, and this hunt is still going strong, steve. >> john, do we have a sense of what kind of search perimeter they've set up there, how big it is, how quickly they were able to establish that after the incident this morning? >> it's hard to say because they haven't establi

joining us by skype as well, john yang, is a former u.s. marshal. don't have a license plate number presumably, they don't have very much forensic evidence to go on? i don't know if pete can hear me. john, until we can make sure that pete is there, let's talk a minute about the terrain. we've all had the recent experience watching this extensive search in upstate new york, which was very rough terrain. what is the region like? i know you're close to wisconsin, but how close are you in fact to them being able to cross the border in a couple hundred miles? >> well, they could do that and it would take some time, but they could do that. this area is very -- it is -- it actually reminds me of the terrain a little bit of northern new york. there are a lot of lakes, it's rolling countryside, rolling farmland. there are some sort of built-up areas, a little more built-up areas than there were around dannemora of housing developments, of sort of suburban plats, development plats. but there are a lot of lakes up here. there are -- there's farmland, heavily w

john yang. know about these issues and what the faa is saying about when they might allow american airlines back up in the air? >> reporter: well, american says that their computer system is slowly coming back, they are restoring the computer service across their system. what it was is that you couldn't check in, the computers at the airports, at the ticket counters and at the gates, were not working. you couldn't check in with those computers, you couldn't check in at kiosks. if you had a smartphone or other device or you checked in on your computer at home, you could still do that. you could still get your boarding passes that way. but the systems at the airports were down. now, american airlines is telling us that the systems are slowly coming back. they can give us no timeline as to when it will be back fully operational. we do know that there are long lines, we are hearing from both on social media from nbc news colleagues who are traveling today, whose families are traveling today and also

i want to bring in nbc's john yang who is live in fox lake. john, what can you tell us more about the resources. when officers are describing the work as tenacious, focused and energetic in finding these three suspects? >> reporter: this is indeed i think that they are very dedicated to doing this. any time there's a fellow officer struck down, that there's sort of a focused effort. but i think in this particular case there's even more. you talk to the officers, you talk to the community and lieutenant gliniewicz was certainly a beloved colleague, a beloved member of this community. all day long people have been coming by leaving items of tribute, a memorial here at the police station. not only adults, but children. earlier today a child, a small girl came and brought her favorite stuffed monkey. talked about seeing him on the streets and talking to him on the streets. this is someone who really did make a big impression on a community. and that's very clear when you talk to people here. but i think that the other message from this press confer
