nbc's john yang has the report and we have to warn you, you may find some of the images disturbing. >> reporter: it was the deadliest day yet in weeks of renewed violence. four separate attacks, including two in jerusalem. one captured on security camera video. a palestinian crashes a car into a bus stop and slashes pedestrians with a machete, one fatally, before he was shot by a security guard. the prime minister benjamin netanyahu pledged to, quote, settle the score with the murderers. in the past four weeks at least seven israelis have been killed in 20 attacks. mostly stabbings like this one in jerusalem. and at least 29 palestinians have died in clashes with israeli forces. the jerusalem mayor have urged citizens to arm themselves. >> many of the cases of neutralizing terrorists was not necessarily done by the policemen, but with people that know how to use a gun very effectively. >> reporter: it is the latest flare-up between israelis and palestinians. a conflict with no viable peace process to contain it. one that exploded last year in gaza, once again threatening to boil over.

nbc's john yang joins me now with more from london. john? >> hi, kate, this is also -- the evolution of this u.s. response has been quite interesting to watch. we now have the president apologizing. remember, on saturday, when this first started, the first response from the united states was that the united states was in the area, that they conducted an air strike to protect, or to respond to u.s. soldiers who were coming under direct fire, and they casually said, there may have been collateral damage to a nearby medical facility. then on monday, general james -- john campbell, the u.s. commander in afghanistan, said no, it wasn't u.s. troops under fire. it was afghan troops and that the air strike was called in to support the afghan forces. yesterday he flatly said that the u.s. was responsible, that they did hit this hospital by mistake, something they had avoided saying before, and now the president has called the head of doctors without borders and apologized. i think what's clear here, they have come to understand that there was a mista

nbc's john yang has more. >> reporter: another community is mourning the loss of a high school football player gone too soon. in chicago today, they're remembering 17-year-old andre high school. you know. he just walked around smiling, nice to talk to. >> reporter: smith went down on the field during the last play of the game thursday night. many students didn't know anything was wrong. they say they saw him take a hit and then walk off the field and later collapse. he died friday morning. smith is the seventh high school football player to die this season either during or immediately after a game, and we're only halfway through. that may seem like a lot, but on average, 12 high school players die each year from injuries sustained directly or indirectly on the football field. >> the number's still the same. it's not decreasing. it's staying the same. so, obviously, we're missing something. >> reporter: many say the key to preventing these kinds of tragedies is better gear. >> football is a game of physics, and right now, i'm telling you, the equipment we collision. you're asking the hum

nbc's john yang is in st. louis. john, good morning. what's the latest?ing, jose. well, this is the big mystery, who's torching the churches of st. louis? this is the most recent. this is the shrine of st. joseph here in st. louis. all these attacks seem to be related. officials say that they all attack the doors, they set fire to the doors of churches, they all use accelerants. now, the shrine here is the one that does break the pattern a bit. the first six all predominantly african-american churches. here, the worshippers predominantly white. the first six all within a three-mile area of each other. the shrine is about eight miles away from that cluster. but it is bringing the community of faith here in st. louis togeth together. after hearing about this torching, the pastor of one of the churches that was torched this past weekend came here to show his support. >> when i woke up this morning and found this out, it was like, wow, all of a sudden, i feel an interesting kind of kinship, you know? it's like -- >> a brotherhood. >> -- wow, we're all being v

john yang is joining us from chicago.ennis hastert specifically in his own voice in court. >> reporter: that's right, thomas. we heard him admit and acknowledge that he structured these bank withdrawals of nearly a million dollars, $952,000 with 106 withdrawals. that he structured it to avoid triggering bank reporting requirements. but he never talked about what the money was for. as you know, the indictment and the plea agreement both say alleged that these moneys were hush money, paid to someone identified as individual a to cover-up misbehavior some three decades ago when hastert was a high school and wrestling coach here in illinois. but he never addressed that. it could come up in sentencing of february 29th when he'll be formally sentenced. in their statement, the prosecutor said that at that time they will bring up all relevant information about hastert's past that could affect this sentence. so it is possible we'll hear more about it, so not necessarily find out who individual a is. >> john yang reporting for us i
