i'm john yang.ht, months of escalating tensions between israelis and palestinians have erupted into a firestorm. in an unprecedented surprise attack, the militant hamas rulers of gaza sent dozens of fighters into israel by land, sea and air. gun battles raged for hours in communities across southern israel. and officials on both sides say israeli soldiers and civilians are now captives in gaza. israel responded with airstrikes on gaza cities, flattening hamas offices and residential buildings. at this hour, at least 200 israelis are reported dead and 1100 wounded. palestinian officials say at least 198 palestinians are dead and 1600 wounded, most from fighting in israel. tonight, special correspondent nurit ben is in tel aviv, and we should warn you that some of the images in her report are disturbing. i'm john yang.israeli military presence in gaza grows, so too, it appears, is the desperation among the residents of the besieged palestinian enclave. the israeli defense force said it sent more ground troops into gaza and that in the previous 24 hours, it struck more than 450 militant targets, including hamas command centers and platforms for launching anti-tank missiles. meanwhile, internet and phone service has come back for much of gaza after israeli strikes had knocked it out on friday. once again tonight, leila molana-allen is in israel for us. reporter: in southern gaza, as desperation grows, what little aid is getting through is at risk of theft. at this united nations warehouse in khan younis, it was every man and child for themselves. the u.n. agency for palestinian refugees called it a sign of a breakdown in civil order, after three weeks under siege. at this nearby refugee camp, families are living on next to nothing. rami al-erqan shares one tent with his wife and six children. >> i wis

john yang is away.re grains of relief tonight for a few of the millions who are trapped inside the gaza strip. the first truckloads of supplies were allowed into gaza from egypt today, a small but significant aid delivery after two weeks of war. this as israel's military is vowing to increase its airstrikes against the hamas-led territory. the death toll continues to mount. more than 1400 israelis and nearly 4400 palestinians killed since the start of the conflict. and, the possibility of an israeli ground invasion into gaza still looms large. special correspondent leila molana-allen has our report tonight. leila: at the rafah border crossing, a rare celebratory moment, as the gates opened for the first time since the start of the war. 20 trucks full of humanitarian aid including food, water and medicine, entered gaza. >> this isn't something new for us, and we have experience with the distribution of the supplies. we've been through four wars before. leila: but humanitarian agencies say the aid is not

i'm john yang.pitol hill, lawmakers are taking eleventh-hour efforts to avoid a government shutdown at midnight tonight right down to the wire. this afternoon, the house overwhelmingly passed a 45-day temporary spending bill after house speaker kevin mccarthy -- unable to overcome disreements in his own party -- turned to house democrats for help. in the end, more democrats voted for the bill than republicans. the measure includes the $16 billion in disaster relief money that president biden wants but not the aid for ukraine that many house republicans don't want. but that's only half of what's needed to avoid a shutdown. the senate has to approve the bill too, and that could come as soon as tonight. after the house vote, mccarthy acknowledged that hardline republicans could try to remove him from the speakership because he reached out to democrats for help. >> when are you guys going to get over that it's alright that you put america first. that it's alright if republicans and democrats joined toge

john yang has more. hn: geoff, president biden has taken many paths to try to fulfill his campaign promises to cancel student debt. one avenue was shut off in june, when the supreme court struck down his plan to cancel as much as $20,000 in debt for some borrowers. so the president has been using existing, targeted programs to cancel some debt. today, he announced another $9 billion in forgiveness for 125,000 borrowers. pres. biden: with the latest debt cancellation, in total, my administration has canceled $127 billion in student debts for nearly 3.6 million americans. this kind of relief is life-changing for individuals and their families. but it's good for our economy as a whole as well. john: separately, the education department is making another attempt at mass relief, like the plan the supreme court ruled unconstitutional. washington post reporter danielle douglas-gabriel covers the economics of higher education, including federal loan programs. what the president adds today, who benefits from that?
