generals. >> the excuse that it's too politically risky to act is no longer acceptable. >> and john yarmuthin kentucky is it politically risky? >> well, you know, i think in some parts of my state. we're a huge gun-owning state, a very big hunting state. i think it might be risky in some places. but i think what this election actually demonstrated is kind of this, again, expose the mythology of the fact that if you take on the nra, you're automatically dead politically. i think that's the key revelation of this election, and that is that you can be for responsible gun safety legislation and not risk your political career. and i think everybody has kind of had their eyes opened to that fact, even in kentucky. >> jim, is the administration preparing to act will or without congress? what do you think? >> well, this is only so much the administration can do without the congress. but we were elected to lead. that's our job. and if we don't lead, then we really bear some culpability for the next massacre of innocents, ed. it's our responsibility now to work with the president to do the right thin

. >> let me bring in congressman john yarmuth. what would you like to see?> i think some of the spending you mentioned could be very youthful. some of the farm subsidies that are unjustified. i'd like to consider a securities transaction pack, the so called wall street packs that can raise tens of billions of dollars. and we can do some cutting, but in that cbo report that you mentioned, it also said that the kind of austerity program which the sequester would represent would be damaging to the recovery, would hurt gdp, and, of course, that's in line with what most economists believe. i think we've got to be very careful when we just say we've got a cut, without regard to the impact of those cuts, both on the economy and on some very important programs. >> you know what the republicans' answer to that is. they say one of the concerns is as we look ahead, and to increase needs for medicare and medicaid. social security, if that deficit reduction is going to stop, it's going to go if the other direction, so the time to cut is now. >> well, i think we can plan

joining me now to talk more about this is kentucky's democratic congressman john yarmuth. sir, great to have you with me. let's talk about this and in the terms of how we see this sequester coming through because right now we're just seven days away. what is your take on the fact that the president was reaching out to mitch mcconnell and reaching out trying to figure out where everybody stands with just seven days left? >> well, i think i'm glad he's done that and i hope it leads to something. what we're about to embark on is again a self-manufactured crisis. it will be horrible for the economy. it will impact a lot of people. just outside my district but certainly affecting my district is fort knox, 5,000 civilian employees of the u.s. army. there will be substantial furloughs and possibly layoffs there if the sequester were in effect for any length of time. so we've got a few days to act. i think we could actually come up with something that just delays the sequester until march 27th. then we would have four weeks in session. we'll all be back for four consecutive weeks
