let's go to john zarrella, he's there in florida. john, what are authorities telling you about the search for this man? >> reporter: well, right now it's considered and has been since yesterday in the afternoon, a recovery operation. not a rescue operation. they obviously believe that he has perished, that jeff bush perished yesterday when he was literally swallowed up in that hole. now, you can probably see that piece of equipment in the distance behind me there, and that is a ground penetrating cone, is what it's called. and they were using that all yesterday afternoon. and what they're doing with that is they are literally, and you can see the men wearing those at the timers and the harnesses. and that is because they are concerned if any chance this ground, that is very unstable, should give at any time, they don't want to lose anymore people. so they're drilling holes, they're trying to get an idea of the scope, the dimensions of this sinkhole, because it is very unstable and they do believe that the sand is very soft, all around

john zarrella joins me live from sephner, florida. rescue crews can go into the hole because clearly it is too dangerous, presumably this entire home could collapse. >> yeah, there is no question about it, brooke. that's exactly what they fear and they're still now assessing the situation. in fact, they have been out here all morning with ground penetrating radar into the afternoon. they have been marking off places where presumably they feel the sinkhole exists, how far out it spread. they have been using electronic probes they placed to measure the depth of the hole. they think it is 20, maybe 30 feet deep, if not more than that. at least 50 feet wide. and what they did within the last hour, right here, where you can see the open cover to the sewer system there, they actually dropped a camera down in there, on wheels, and they're running that camera, they may have already done it, all the way to the back side of the house, to try and get an idea if they can see where that sinkhole actually starts, how far out it starts, where it is,

cnn's john zarrella is there. and john, it appears the headline is that they have called off the search. the body of jeff bush. explain to us what we just heard. >> reporter: i think -- trying to get his body out of there the nature of the sinkhole. and for all intents and purposes. they never made any foret in there since the initial collapse. the rescue was really a rescue from the periphery to see if they could determine sounds of life. it wasn't as if people went in and tried to dig for a body. and i think the other head line, of course, on all of this is that that being said, that it's very likely that, you know, mr. bush, you know, his body would remain en tombed in there and there is no way they'll recover his body and the demolition effort would begin sometime tomorrow morning as they tear the house down, piece by piece, after letting the family try to get in and get some belongings out. those are the news that is made this evening here, alina. >> john, sinkholes obviously in florida are relatively common,

john zarrella is live in florida for us. john, authorities said this isn't a typical sinkhole because it is huge. how, then, are they approaching this recovery? >> reporter: yeah, exactly right, brianna. the concern is that the sinkhole is growing from news conferences they've had. they're doing a lot of are ground testing. they continue to do ground testing. in fact, they've moved us back even further now, because the plan is for them to go ahead and test the ground on this side of the street as well. they do not know the scope of the sinkhole exactly how wide it is. they movknow it's about 30 feet deep, continuing to deepen but don't movie how far out it may spread. they need a baseline sample where the ground finally becomes sturdy. that's the problem. they haven't been in the house since the incident took place a couple of nights ago now, because it is just so unstable. so they are trying to figure the best way to approach the situation. now, you know, they evacuated the house to the right. they evacuated the house to the

john zarrella is out front of this story. what do you know about the crash? we know the plane was taking off from the west to the east out of fort lauderdale. that's about 5 to 7 miles north of fort lauderdale international airport. it had nothing to do with international airport. almost immediately after taking off, the pilot began to bank the plane in an attempt, authorities say, to get back to the airport. we know he did not make it. we done know at this point in time if any distress called was issued from the pilot to the tower. eyewitnesss are saying they saw the plane literally spiral into the ground. it exploded. as you mentioned when it hit the ground, engulfing those cars in that parking lot there. about seven cars burst into flames. the thick, black smoke that we saw billowing up from the initial crash site was because the plane was so filled with fuel having just taken off and from the cars that it hit on the ground. erin? >> john, let me ask you. i know this has to be tough, but do they know why the plane may have crashed? >> reporter: investigato

cnn's john zarrella joins us on the phone right now. what are you finding out, john?t information we're hearing from our affiliate station here in miami is in fact three people were onboard that plane. do not know who they are. we do not, according to authorities, know whether the plane issued any distress call, or declared an emergency. what we do know is that it took off about 4:30 this afternoon, about an hour after ago, from ft. lauderdale executive airport. and almost immediately began to try and make an emergency return to the airport, according to authorities. but as you were reporting, it did not make it. crashing into a bunch of parked cars near a warehouse area just to the east of the airport. it would have been taking off on what's known as runway 8, going from west to east when that plane went down. it happened near what's known as power line road. perhaps more remarkable than anything else, wolf, it appears there were no injuries on the ground from this incident. the video, of course, showing a lot of foam that was sprayed by the firefightering units that

cnn's john zarrella is on the scene for us. john, what's the latest on this tragedy?you look at the house, no one has any idea of the tragedy that took place. 24 hours at this time, family members were coming and going no idea that the ground was going to give way within hours. as you mentioned, a sinkhole literally opened up underneath there and swallowed jeff bush. his family members tried to get him when they heard an enormous noise. they could not rescue him or pull him out of the hole. that's a ground penetrating cone. they are looking for safe areas, how far out does the sinkhole extend? they are trying -- and the men working that a few minutes ago are there in the background. they are all wearing safety harnesses because the concern, wolf, if is that that ground could collapse. that entire house could collapse into the sinkhole as it expands, if it's still expanding, swallowing everything up. they are being very, very careful. this is a recovery operation now. it is no longer a rescue operation. the authorities fear for the worse for jeff bush and, again, they

john zarrella takes us through the frightening sequence of events. >> victor, brianna, hard to believe that 24 hours ago family members were coming and going here. the house behind me totally unsuspecting within hours the sink hole was going to open up northeast them swallowing up the back two bedrooms. and in those bedrooms, one of the family members jeff bush laying in his bed when the sink hole literally swallowed him up. other family members tried to come to his aid when they heard a loud noise. by the time they could get into his room, all they could see was a portion of the mattress sticking out from the hole. their desperate attempts to try to pull him out of there failed. we talked to some of those family members earlier. >> i heard my brother scream. so i ran to the bedroom. i went to open the door and run in, turned the light on and i seen there was no floor there. everything was gone. our brother's bed, brother's dresser, my brother's tv and my brother was gone. and this big hole all i could see was barely see his bed. and i jumped in the hole to try and take him out and got

rescuers resumed their search for the body of a man who was swallowed by a sinkhole, and cnn's john zarrella is live there in florida. john, they actually called off the search last night fought jeff bush and began again around 7:00 this morning. are they any closer to recovering his body? >> reporter: no. they aren't. you know, quite frankly, it is an effort now to just try to find out the parameters, the dimensions of this sinkhole to see how wide it goes. they know it's at least 25, 30 feet deep, and continuing to deepen. they know that the initial sinkhole itself is about 30 feet wide. about 30 feet wide. but that around that, it's very sandy and it is very steep. and because of that, they believe that it has the potential to continue to expand. before they even go inside that house, and no one's been in that house since thursday night when the collapse occurred and when the family was pulled out of there, they have been continuing to do ground testing, ground radar systems, that they're using to try and figure out how widespread this sinkhole could become. >> are they concerned about th

. >> john zarrella is there. john, obviously just a shocking story. is under way right behind you. i know we just said there hadn't been signs of life. what's the latest that you know? >> reporter: no, that's exactly right, erin. and in fact they're treating this as a recovery operating now. what they are doing, you can see behind me, that's a ground-penetrating device. what they're trying to do is get a handle on the exact dimensions of this sinkhole. how wide out does it spread. they do not want to send anybody in, they do not want to go near the house for fear that other people who they send in could ultimately be swallowed up at any moment if this thing would collapse. you can see the men working there, they are wearing harnesses, there are cables attached to them so that if something happens and the ground collapses, they can be yanked out. that's how concerned they are about all of this. but of course for the family, it is -- they are very distraught tonight and there are some 911 call that came out last night that really gives you an indication

john zarrella, you got the info on all of the rocks.i want to know if there's life on mars. was there life on mars? >> reporter: well you want the good news or bad news? i will give you -- you know, the bad news is, nasa scientists haven't found life on mars yet and probably isn't any life existing there right now. but, but the good news is that, what they are telling us today is, that they do in fact believe at least at this particular site on mars, maybe all over mars, the prerequisite ingredients for life did exist. how did they find it? that's pretty important. that was one of the primary functions of the curiosity mission, go to mars, find out if there weare bliluilding blocks life exist. they drilled into their first rock on mars. they scooped up the dust, the samples from the drill and put it in the on board chemistry lab on the curiosity rover. curiosity has its own capability to analyze samples. you can can see the animation showing that process attacking place. they found sulfur, oxygen, they found some carbon die objectionize

john zarrella is as close to that sinkhole as anyone else is being allowed to get and he joins me now by telephone. what is the circumstance right now and what about neighbors? and i'll warn our viewers, again, this is a live picture. >> reporter: it's a pale blue house with darker blue trim and american tl american flag out front. hard to imagine that there is not much of anything inside. but what we're seeing now are members of an engineering team from bracken engineering and they are rolling literally with ground penetrating radar, trying to figure out how far the sinkhole extends, if it extends to the neighbor's houses. i can see ground penetrating radar device coming literally right up to the corner of the street by the mail box. there are dozens of people standing around on the side of the house here. we were told that the owner of house had just come here. he apparently does that live in that house, jerry bush and jeff bush were living in that house. but he's been talking to the media, as well. the engineering firm is trying to figure out if this hole which is still growing. >>
