lyndon johnson was aware of this. part of the story is johnson and it wasll, but part of the civil rights movement and the enormous pressure for members of congress to act differently, and part of it is the 1964 election, which really was a landmark one that changes the policymaking environment until the midterm elections of 1966. >> the fierce urgency of now really captures lyndon johnson's approach to governing in a year when people thought he should have waited until after the election to focus on the voting rights act and the civil rights act. why did he decide to take this in 1964? e comes from martin luther king. part of the reason lyndon johnson feel so much pressure is the civil rights movement is no longer willing to wait. rightsnally, civil activists have been sold, wait until another year. wait until the election is over. and they were very clear what's lyndon johnson was in the white house, they would not do that anymore. of the reason johnson did that was he and others in congress or responding to the pre

johnson was very strategic. more so than kennedy in understanding the value that the civil rights movement could offer him in terms of moving some of these midwestern republicans even though the southern democrats would never vote for this. martin luther king was a great political strategist and understood each time he put together one of these protests that it made it harder for the southern democrats to block progress on the bill. the damn between the white house and the movement and members of congress all for civil rights revolved around these protests. >> in putting together your book have you been able to talk to those that still remember the johnson years? >> some. i tend to be a historian that uses the carr kifes and i have written a lot on it. sometimes i use interviews and i have spoken with people that are around them. but the heart of my research really comes out of the johnson library, the presidential memos and all kinds of communication within the white house comes from congressional speeches and

one of johnson's one of the criticisms you can level with johnson and for many months he really hadn't studied the geography closely south of the town. and they that you about snake creep gap. wheeler didn't have any pickets and johnson's men are able to march through through without a fight and then when they come out of the eastern end of the gap, of the gap and then they see some earth works around the town. clearly some confederate there is. and he didn't have calvary with him. it was a terrible mistake on the part of the federals. and macpherson is worried. he doesn't know how many confederates are in front of him and the confederates might march down from dalton and strike him in the flank and instead of pushing forward and seizing the western in atlanta and cutting johnson's supply line this holds his army back to snake creep gap. when johnson learns of this, the confederates had a small contingent of calvary, johnson orders a retreat, a very well-organized retreat of his troops from the of the vicinity southward. macpherson had lost an enormous opportunity to strike a crippling

just 218 days later, 50 years ago tomorrow, johnson signed that landmark bill into law.ames brown talked to one of the men who helped lbj change the course of american history. >> the top pen was given to me by president johnson. used to sign the civil rights act of 1964. >> reporter: you got a hold of that pen. 80-year-old clifford alexander is still very proud of his time as an aide to lyndon johnson's white house. after graduating from harvard and yale law school, he served as civil rights advisor to the president. one of the few african americans in the white house then. >> the only african american on the staff at the time. >> what was that like, cliff? >> it was like many things from his life where black people were not included as much as they should have been. but in the case of lyndon johnson, he made me as comfortable as he made his white aides. he was a man who was forward looking and who cared about people. >> he was part of the team working on the civil rights bill, but he says it was johnson's passion that produced the historic legislation. >> first of all,

bar in the northern california town of guerneville was becoming a hangout for 32-year-old michelle johnson. the one-time aspiring model had fallen on tough times. after the breakup of her ten-year marriage, michelle and her two young children were forced to live with her parents, and that wasn't working out. >> there was some strain between michelle and her mom and the stepfather, paul. they didn't see eye to eye on a lot of things. >> so, michelle moved out and got her own apartment. to celebrate, michelle went to the bull pen bar, where she was supposed to meet her friends. michelle stayed for about 25 minutes, talked briefly to some bar patrons, and had three drinks. >> we could see that she seemed to be acting appropriately, she seemed to be having a good time. >> then she left by herself at 12:54 a.m. michelle's friends who were in michelle's apartment building left to meet her at the bar. but as they walked outside, they saw something unusual. it was a red pickup truck with a woman in the back of the truck flailing her arms. >> all we knew was there was a woman who was in distress in

johnson & johnson raised its earnings forecast for the second consecutive quarter.rugs business is now the biggest unit of the company. all day my cohost carol massar has been at the company headquarters in new brunswick, new jersey, and she joins me now. >> as you know, the company did come out with earnings. >> despite the results, 21% growth as you just mentioned. shares of johnson & johnson didn't react positively. >> they did beat the top and bottom lines. a couple of things might be going on. the company did boost its forecast for 2014. some think they maybe didn't boosted enough. you have that going on. there is also some concern that blockbusters new could be facing some competition later in the year and there may be some disappointment or concerns about that. so maybe a combination of that could be at play. with the chief executive, what did they put acquisitions on -- but the emphasis on, acquisitions or growth? safelittle bit of both is to say. pharmaceuticals are certainly a bright spot. i spoke to alex gorski, the chairman and ceo about the strong growt
