she also petitions andrew johnson and gets audience with him and after this. in the spring of 1866, he is allowed to to go to fort monroe and see her. took her basically a year. she was not allowed to see him. not allowed really to communicate with him. but after that, she can move in at fort monroe. davis was to a kind of an officer's barracks. and varina also just continues to do what she can to advocate for her husband. and they have 1867, two years after his capture. davis his lawyers succeeded in obtaining a writ habeas corpus, which meant that the military had to turn over to civilian custody. so there's a hearing in. richmond. and then davis is released on a $100,000 bail. that money is put up by about 18 wealthy northerners like horace greeley, cornelius garrett smith. but the trials postcode and davis and varina end up going to canada. in fact, that's where this photograph was taken, was in montreal. they also spent some time in the lenox field and then travel overseas, going to liverpool, going to london. they visited paris, which loved, by the way.
