again, we should tell our viewers that we have a camera there inside the oval office and where again according to kelly's reporting president trump is about to pardon a black boxer posthumously, jack johnson. he was involved in the original fight of the century and according to the biographer ken burns some years ago at one point he was in this country for the better part of more than a decade, the most famous and the most infamous black person there was. so anyway, we'll get back to more of that in a moment. but right to the news of the day. victor cha, he had been a candidate to be ambassador to south korea at one point. and cara lee with me also. of course an nbc news national political reporter. always good to have you. victor, let me start with you. this cancellation coming just two days after president trump meets with south korea's president. do we think at this point that south korea had any idea that president trump was going to cancel this thing? >> my guess is that they didn't. the decision to meet with the north korean leader by president as you know happened when the south korean national security adviser was in washington, d.c. and i think they were surprised by president trump agreeing to meet. and i think that they were equally surprised by his decision to cancel. i mean one thing that is clear is that there is only one person that is making policy on north korea and that is the president himself. >> south korea's president moon jae-in put out a statement a short time ago and i will read it in part here. this is just a snippet from that statement. denuclearization and the lasting peace on the korean peninsula cannot be abandoned or delayed. what is south korea likely to do now, victor? >> well, i think that they will go into crisis mode for sure and try to ensure that they can maintain a diplomatic process. what we mean by that is as a result of this failed effort of the summit, there has now been established a high level quiet channel of communication directly between the u.s. and dprk. and so hopefully the south koreans will play shuttle diplomacy to get them to get them to use the channel to create the right conditions for a summit. what i think nobody wants is for this to head down a bad track where the north koreans abandon their testing, missile testing moratorium, which they agreed to at the beginning of this diplomatic process, and if they start testing missiles again or launching things into space, then we'll end up in a very bad place like we were in 2017 when they did 20 ballistic missile tests and one hydrogen bomb test. >> carol, the new secretary of state mike pompeo was on the hill a short time ago and he like the president we just heard there, he seemed to be holding out hope that this might happen after all. this is part of what secretary pompeo said. >> i am hope ful that we can continue to have conversations and put this back on track so that we can get to a place where we can achieve the outcome. i think it is worth -- we talk a lot about summits and deals and the like. it is not about the deal. it is about the outcome. right? it is about achieving this permanent physical change and transformation that will have the opportunity to change the world on. >> do we think that this is perhaps part of a larger strategy? i mean might this be a tactic that the president is using to try to gain some leverage once these meetings do happen? or is t
