he's an aide on johnston's staff. so he sends the governor to the troops because word is tennessee troops refusing to charge. so the governor comes over to talk to the tennesseans and he couldn't get them to budge. so it's breckinridge's force. breckinridge writes back to johnston, telling him he's having trouble getting johnston's group to attack. he says i think you can do it. breckinridge is quite negative he can do anything. johnston says, well, then i will go with you and we will move them. so johnston arrives in amongst the troops. and he's opinion carrying around a tin cup he picked up in prentiss's field, his portion of the spoils.

johnston enters the camps. his troops are so overwhelmed with the success that they've had, they had issued rations before they left corynth. most of the men cooked and ate their food before they even got on the road. so, remember, the battle was supposed to have been fought on the 4th. now it is fought on the 6th. many of them have not eaten for two days or more. then they hit this union camp and later on, union troops would say they weren't surprised. the confederate veterans were commenting, well, maybe they weren't surprised but they did have the most devoted cooks in the world because food was on the fire when they entered camp. but remember it had been a typical morning in camp. not a lot of action planned for a typical sunday morning in camp. of course, church services, probably parades or reviews. but not a great deal of activity usually in a camp that's on a standdown, and so it's a typical morning. so confederates hit this union camp, and it's like a treasure trove of foods. i mean the feds have luxur

june of 1861, general joseph johnston was up at harpers ferry, and a message to johnston set the tone. johnston was told that davis wanted harpers ferry held as long as possible. but he said davis said that his commander on the scene, johnston, had to make the final decision. kentucky, a few months later in september, kentucky as i'm sure you know claimed neutrality. not siding with the union or the confederacy. and davis did not want confederate soldiers to be the first to enter the state, his birth state as it was lincoln's. yet his commander out there, former episcopal bishop of louisiana leonimus pope decided he had to go into kentucky and occupy columbus on the mississippi river before the federals got there. so pope broke the neutrality. political uproar. the governor of tennessee writes davis and says, look, this is going to ruin us in kentucky. you've got to get that man out of there. davis immediately sent a telegram to pope. you've got to come back. pope remonday straited, no, i need to do this. what did davis tell him? davis says the necessity must justify the action. the m

davis fired johnston because johnston wouldn't tell davis what johnston was going to do. even so, in my judgment, this instance was the exception that proves the rule. a much more common situation prevailed after the failed confederate advance into kentucky in 1862. davis had high hopes for this confederate offensive into his home native state. but as you all know, it failed. and confederate failure in kentucky came from several directions. at the same time the inability of confederate commanders to cooperate was certainly a central reason for that disaster. i said davis was terribly supportive and in the confederate withdrawal into tennessee he called these three men to come to washington, to come to richmond. braxton bragg, polk, who was bragg's senior subordinate, and edmond kirby smith, who commanded another confederate army in kentucky. he called them all to richmond. and what did they say in richmond? each man defended himself, deflected responsibility, and blamed the other two. after hearing these recriminations, davis incredibly left all three in place. he even pr
