and inside the house chamber tonight, jon karl. he's going to be standing right behind the shoulder of the house speaker john boehner, right above him. so, he's going to be our eyes and ears inside that room tonight. >> jon, can you hear us now? tell us about what you're sensing and seeing. >> well, diane, i've never seen anything like it here. i mean, the chamber is completely mixed up, democrat and republican. you know, usually the democrats are solidly on one side, the republicans are solidly on the other side. and i've been noticing throughout the day, i've come in and out of the chamber, noticing people starting to reserve blocks of seats, hours and hours ago, for the various delegations. on one side, the democratic side, you have the arizona delegation, for example. you have an empty seat for gabrielle giffords. on one side of it is remember jeff flake. but it's quite a scene, diane. and people seem a little bit unsure where they should sit as they came in. it looked kind of like a cafeteria during freshman orientation week.

good morning good to see you, jon. just a few months ago, it would have been hard to imagine the ceos of jpmorgan and goldman sachs attending a state dinner. how much does this coincide with the chinese president's visit to the u.s.? >> well i think there's a couple things going on here. one is the president's discovering it's good politics. his approval ratings are rising as he's moving towards a centrist approach. but the other thing is i think we have to think about where the economy is. we have woken up from a recession and moved into an extremely competitive world. you know, it's not just china. it's also india, brazil, russia. these are economies that are growing very fast. you're seeing a president and washington focus on the fact that the united states has to get its act together, if it's going to get its economy growing like some of these other places. and that's the direction he's trying to move in. you're going to be hearing a lot of talk in the state of the union address and elsewhere about competitiveness.
