jon: dr.ess the airline industry is facing some challenges this holiday season as it looks into changing the rules regarding a mental health evaluations for pilots and air traffic controllers after dealing with some close calls this year. madison our newest reporter here at box has a lace on that. >> good evening jon. our sources in the industry say it is really common for pilots to fear losing their certification to fly if they do speak up about mental health issues. the chairman of the national transportation safety board address this issue saying quotes the system that shames and silences people can lead to unacceptable safety risks. example comes as recently as october off-duty alaskan pilot pleaded not guilty after officials say tried to turn off both complaint engines at midflight. he claims he was having a nervous breakdown. these individual episodes are small bits of a broader story they're asking us to think hard about how do we address these barriers in a meaningful way while maintai

jon: this is bloomberg markets, i am jon erlichman with sonali basak.e for our stock of the hour, we have been tracking pennsylvania real estate investment trust which has filed for bankruptcy for the second time in three years. its focus on multi's made it vulnerable to the changing landscape for the commercial real estate sector and for retailers. and in higher interest rates, and the company is hiring right now. but it has really struggled with its debt load. bloomberg's abigail doolittle joins us with more. i guess, to hear about a company going bankrupt twice in three years, it seems pretty rare. i don't know what the numbers tell you. abigail: certainly never heard of it before. bankruptcy itself on a relative basis is rare, but twice in three years is pretty incredible and the first was in 2020, the pandemic, as shoppers were not able to go out. this owner owns 19 malls, class b. lower rents, worse locations and with the pandemic, it was just more than they could handle. what makes it interesting is you have a reit going bankrupt twice. most of t

jon: very true.t of people were looking at this decision today almost like a test run of what kind of language we are going to be hearing from the fed. this is the third meeting in a row that the bank of canada has kept rates unchanged. like this dialogue in the market about the possibility of rates going down next year in the u.s., there are plenty of economists that think we are going to see a reversal in rate policy and year. but the bank of canada is still focusing on the fight against inflation and not quite ready to say that fight is completed. let's bring in dawn desjardins with deloitte canada and joins us in our toronto studio. what you make of this? everybody expected they would be on hold again. people were wondering about what the language would look like. how did you assess it? dawn: i think what they are trying to do is say we are making good headway. we have seen slowing. consumers, businesses as well. definitely seeing the impact of these rate increases. inflation is coming down and t

jon: on that note can you give us an update?known former e-commerce leader who came to the helm of the company about how big a digital push they have made and how that has assisted the company. john: yeah. it's been an increasing focus there. they are trying to get more and more of their sales out of that digital channel. really a for sizing sales through their app, sales through their website. also trying to maximize sales on the brick-and-mortar side through their own stores. pulling back on some of those outside relationships. yes. digital is definitely an increasing focus for them. we will be watching to see significant growth they are relative to the brick-and-mortar side when they report. vonnie: nike shares up nearly 4% year-to-date only but that includes a nearly 20% increase since the end of august. really fascinating stock story. thanks to john edwards. coming up, how banks are planning to secure a lucrative role in private credit. this is bloomberg. ♪ jon: this is bloomberg markets. time now for today's for what it's

jon: that you brought that up.ted, this has been a year where there has been some highlighted cost controls, at least at some of the biggest banks. katherine: each quarter, ceos are asked about how they are managing costs, keeping expenses low, but when it comes to talent, you do not want to be too stingy and lose your best people. at any bank, those higher performers are going to get paid. what a bank ceo does not want to do is come back the next quarter and say the performance has been hurt because they do not have the people to keep building and grow revenue. if you are building out a trading desk, you want to continue that momentum. ryan moynahan -- brian moynihan has said that bank of america will dedicate more capital to the training unit if they can continue to deploy that money and grow. that could change if there is quarters where the unit is hurt, but so far we are seeing if you in more capital, they have been able to take market share from their competitors. vonnie: it is important for some of the banks.

jon: that is helpful context.nt back a year ago, especially with the restaurant operators, it felt like there was a great economic unknown. did you feel the tone or management teams on these calls was different? we are talking about whether the u.s. economy can navigate through 2024 relatively well. are the ceos speaking more confidently? john: i would say costco certainly feels confident knowing into the year. they have the model to work in this economy. they are benefiting from people who are trading down looking for discounts but nevertheless able to afford their membership fees. one thing investors are looking for is when costco will raise those membership fees. they have been saying it is a matter of when, not if. some people are looking for that to happen sometime in the first half of the coming year. i think darden was more cautious given the trends they are seeing with their high end chains. but, they feel like they are positioned to benefit as conditions improve, if they do. jon: great to get that perspec

but jon tester won in 2018 when there was not a presidential race. the top of the ticket is going to make a big difference here. boy, we could not say enough how difficult it is for democrats facing this senate -- it is a tough map. >> and these are the senate candidates that donald trump has endorsed this cycle. not many. unlike last cycle, he tayed out of some of them. only ohio was the one that was contested primary. the republican committee has stayed out of that primary. so that is not in odds with the gop leaders an the one in west virginia isn't in line with gop leaders. but there is the battle for the house. republicans clearly are favored in the senate, but the question is the house. democrats, the narrow majority and they seem to be favored. but there are questions about redrawing lines in districts and that is such a huge issue. yes, it is in the weeds and something that plays out and it is hard to see. but it has such a significant impact and just look at the state's in which these district lines could be redrawn because of court battles
