i'm jon kelley. marla tellez has the day off. well, the coast guard has found that boat used by a kidnapping suspect in a bizarre abduction. south san francisco police say a man grabbed his two children and then took off on a stolen yacht. this all started off 3:00 yesterday afternoon. nbc bay area's bob redell is live in south san francisco with all the latest. good morning. >> reporter: yes. here in san francisco where this abduction started earlier this week. good morning to you, jon. coast guard station san francisco tells us they have located this sailboat, that they have a c-130 flying circles over it, trying to keep an eye on it until a cutter can arrive. one is on the way from treasure island as we speak to that boat's location, which is still about 50 miles off the shore between santa cruz and monterey. south san francisco police believe that christopher maffei and his two young children, age 2s and 3, are on board. he abducted them tuesday from their mother's home in stran and he took them out to sea on a 40-foot sailbo

. >> i'm jon kelley. it is a crash that changed one family's life forever and a push to change the law. >> that family is praising lawmakers and the governor for creating tougher restricts for party buses. we have christie smith who spoke with the family about the reaction to the new law. >> reporter: good morning, laura. doug and linda studebaker wrapped up the press conference. their 19-year-old son was killed after partying on a party bus. today, they are celebrating preside the fact that governor jerry brown signed the bill into law. it is called the brett studebaker law. he was three times the legal limit in 2010. the bill now requires that party bus operators ask the person making the reservation if alcohol will be served and if anyone is under 21. they also have to check identification. none of this was required on the night that brett went out to celebrate a friend's birthday. >> i feel happy that something good can come out of something so bad. >> i think it's nicely put. we feel brett's presence

. >> and i'm jon kelley. people don't usually celebrate the opening of a new pedestrian bridge. this is different. this stretches over where a toddler was killed. we have the latest with what is an emotional ribbon cutting. dami damian, you see this coming full circle. >> reporter: people ask why this wasn't built before the tragedy in 2005. dozens of people cut across the railroad tracks to go home or to the strip malls. here is what brought it out today. back in 2005, alexander agulair was crossing his baby sitter across the tracks and he was hit and killed. today, a pedestrian bridge will open across monterrey road near blossom hill road. in memory of the boy, the bridge will be known as xander's crossing. >> this is huge. this is a long time coming and it's finally here. you know, just can't be happy. happy enough for all the people from this city that came together and built this bridge in the honor of my grandson. >> reporter: the bridge cost $10 million. developers used city, state and federal funds to complete it. red tape in getting some of the funds delayed the constru

i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. a san jose man will be in court today accused of slowly poisoning his girlfriend. the woman is a 63-year-old woman living in a san rafael nursing home. police say 67-year-old robert lockridge repeatedly brought her bottled water containing chlorine. he allegedly told her it was a vitamin drink. nurses at the facility became suspicious and tested the water levels themselves before calling police. >>> the school principal accused of dealing drugs on the side is expected back in court this week. eric lewis made his first appearance before a judge yesterday. the principal at montague elementary school in santa clara was charged with five felonies, including the sale and distribution of controlled substances. investigators say after searching lewis' apartment they found a number of surveillance cameras, including a hidden camera inside a teddy bear. they're now going through his hard drive and his computers. >>> there is new hope the finances -- the father o

i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. this morning there's a new plan to bring down the high rate of suspensions for a group of students in the east bay school system. chrissie smith is live where the oakland school district approves a deal to reduce the number of african-american males who actually get kicked out of school. explain it. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. the school board unanimously approved this deal late last night, that after the u.s. department of education launched an investigation about four months ago and it specifically looked into oakland unified's zero tolerance policy when dealing with students. it found that it actually may be violating some students' civil rights. specifically right now african-american students make up about 32% of all students in oakland public schools, but they receive 63% of all the suspensions given out. in may the department of education's office of civil rights looked into whether the district treated black students more harshly than white students. the agreement

i'm jon kelley. the fire in richmond burned for hours and that smoke made thousands of people sick. today, we are learning what the air quality district is changing with regards to the fire at the chevron refinery. >> we have more with christie smith. >> reporter: good morning. this is the first time that all of the agencies looking into the chevron refinery fire are here under one roof at the air quality management district offices in san francisco. they are talking about what they found out so far. there are community groups represented here saying they want a clearer picture of what it is they are really breathing over in richmond. from the bay area air quality management district, they want that information particularly after a massive fire. it is standing-room only with each agency, including the safety board and chevron represented here. smoke on august 6th sent a huge plume of smoke in the air. thousands turned up at hospitals complaining of breathing problems. the air quality management district said samples were below state exposure levels. one agency said it was above the

. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning. this just in to the newsroom, a surprising change of course for the concord teen charged in the crash that killed a father and daughter. >> we have jodi hernandez who got out of the courtroom. >> reporter: the teenager struck and killed the father and daughter along the sidewalk last april. changed his plea to guilty. the victims' family walked out of the courtroom in tears after hearing the teenager admit for the first time that he was driving 72 miles in hour in a 45-mile-an-hour zone hitting and killing the man and his 5-year-old daughter. the teenager pleaded guilty this morning to two counts of manslaughter with gross negligence and one count of reckless driving. his attorney told the court he has written numerous apology letters that the attorney has been holding on to. the teenager tried to get up and apologize in the courtroom, but the family stopped him. the family wasn't prepared emotionally to hear that apology today. >> we understand that that's a good thing that he has re

i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. back open. ahead of schedule. the dumbarton bridge ready for commuters this morning. caltrans crewsç finished their retrofit work around 7:30 last night. they add add joint that will better protect int an earthquake. crews will continue to work but none of the work will require a closure. good news there. >> we're learning details about what actually led up to a jet ski crash that landed a san jose mother and her children in the hospital. marla tellez is following the story and is in the newsroom. good morning. >> good morning. it was supposed to be a memorable labor day for the kazmi family on the waters of south lake tahoe. instead a day of jet skiing turned unforgettable. police say parents sufian and subia rented a pair of jet skis from the marina, something they had never done. daughter hopped on behind mom and the son with his father. about 30 minutes in police say subia's jet ski crossed paths with her husband, each going about 30 miles per hour. that's when they crashed and all four were ejected. >> nobod

i'll laura garcia-cannon in for jon kelley. >> i'm marla tellez. well you could say it was an iconic meeting. you got to watch live as "endeavour" passed over the top of the golden gate bridge. >> it happened not once, but twice and thousands gathered at crissy field as it happened. we have christie smith out there as the crowds greeted the shuttle. quite spectacular, christie. >> reporter: absolutely. the crowds have thinned out because it happened 20 minutes ago. we got two passes as the "endeavour" passed by the golden gate bridge twice. people said they would scream and yell and actually there was just a moment of silence as it went by. people were taken by the moment. then we heard the roar of the crowd and applause as the shuttle "endeavour" flew by the golden gate bridge the second time. people gathered at chrisrissy f were not sure if it would come back. it went up north to marin and an across the golden gate bridge south. amazing to see. it was one of five shuttles spent between 1981 and 2003. people got here early at crissy field to see h

i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. south bound lanes of highway 17 are closed as crews clean up what's left of a big rig fire. >> the fire happened near the redwood estates exit and spread from the cab to the hillside. damian trujillo is live there with all of the latest. what's happening out there? >> reporter: jon, we're here at bear creek road on highway 17 as far south as you can get now. those big rigs behind me, they are parked on the fast lane of southbound highway 17. they can't go anywhere. the accident is about three miles south of here, as you mentioned at redwood estates. a big mess overnight as the santa cruz mountains. the call came in last night a. truck carrying non-flammable liquid somehow caught fire. no one was injured but the accident really made things difficult for people trying to get to and from santa cruz. the northbound lanes opened early this morning, and just about a half hour ago the chp officer on the scene told me it will be another couple of hours before the southbound lanes are open. a

. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody. happening right now, several dozen protesters vowing to occupy justin herman plaza despite a police order to leave the grounds. bob redell has an update on the situation. >> reporter: this situation might resolve itself peacefully. good morning to you, jon. about 100 yards to the right down market street are about 30 sfpd police officers. they have put on riot helmets with the intent of coming down here to make sure these occupy sf protesters take down the eight tents they had set up. they gave them a deadline of 6:00 which is right now. you can see the last of the eight tents is being taken down. the protesters did take these down on their own. police did not have to come in here and force the removal of these tents which they said they were going to do. they did come in around 5:30, 5:40 and said you should start dismantling them. if you can get them down pie 6:00, we'll let you stay here on the plaza. >> it sounded like a fair enough agreement and, you know, we're taking the tents

laura garcia-cannon is off today. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody. we get you right to the latest on that breaking news we've been covering all morning long. a major fire at a prep school on the peninsula. this one has been burning for nearly an hour and a half. damian trujillo is there live from the beechwood school in menlo park and has all the latest. good morning. >> reporter: it's going pretty strong here, jon. we still can't get the firefighters in to find out what caused this fire because it is still going. behind me are two portable classrooms. one of them is engulfed. they have water pouring in from both sides, one from the top and one from the side and this fire is just not going out so they're battling the flames here. the good news is that we don't have any reports of any injuries so far. we are hearing that the principal has cancelled classes for obvious reasons both today and tomorrow. we're going to look for that principal and try to confirm that. we're kind of on a frontage road here so we're not at the front entrance of the school be

i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. and we do begin with breaking news as a shooting in oakland sends a juvenile to the hospital. it happened just after midnight near a best western on macon road. no word on what led up to the shooting or how old that victim is. bob redell is headed to the scene to gather information and we will bring you the latest information when we get it. >>> new details on the terrifying story of a car colliding with a gas pump and then bursting into flames. it all happened in the east bay. surveillance camera caught that crash happening at the gas station in martinez yesterday. the suv was backing up when it hit the pump and then spins. a fire immediately erupts there. the initial investigation shows the driver accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake while attempting to back up. firefighters were on the sdmeen minutes. this one took quite some time to knock out that fire, but somehow nobody has injured. fire officials there say that's due in part to a very quick-thinking gas

"today in the bay'" christie smith is live with all the latest details. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you and happy friday. it certainly seems odd to arson investigators, and that is three separate fires that started within an hour and they were just a couple of blocks from each other. two of them happened at the same strip mall where we are at this morning. i wanted to show you this wall here. kind of hard to see but it's blackened on one side. that goes all the way up into the eaves of this building, it's a strip mall. if steve can pan over in the darkness, there's also a tree that caught fire and that goes down the hill onto the main street. we are on sycamore. now, when police arrived around 10:40 last night, they saw a huge orange glow in the sky and thought the back of the mall was on fire. firefighters arrived and found big f

good morning, everybody, i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. a deadly accident on 680 has shut down part of the freeway. mike is tracking it. >> it has shut down all of the freeway. all of 680 is closed for those just before stoneridge drive. this is just south of the dublin interchange. you see the yellow and orange approaching the scene. also 580 westbound is slow because folks are diverted there and continuing on westbound 580 past the scene to foothill road, south to stoneridge drive from you get back on the freeway. there was a pedestrian on 680 that was hit and killed earlier this morning, about 4:00 a.m. bob redell is heading out to the scene to gather more details and any other progress that may be made. right now we have no estimated time of reopening. the coroner has yet to arrive on scene for the investigation. 680 closed between 580 and stoneridge drive. we'll track this for now and send it back to you. >>> a special community meeting will be held tonight to update people on future action against chevron for last month's refinery fi

. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody. we begin with a developing story out of oakland where an early morning shooting has sent an 11-year-old child to the hospital. bob redell is live at the scene of that shooting. bob, i know it's early out there but you had a chance to sit down with the family members, correct? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, jon. at first angelina thought it was the sound of fireworks that was ringing out around 1:00 this morning outside her home here on macon road in oakland, but she realized that wasn't the case once she heard her 11-year-old brother, luis antonio start screaming. that sound, as i mentioned, was gunfire randomly aimed at their house. you can see some of the bullet holes right there in the front. another one of those bullets passed through a photograph of luis antonio. as you can see it was just inside their house. and another one of those bullets hit him in the chest. he's at oakland children's right now. his family just spoke with his mother who's with him. that bullet did h

. >> and i am jon kelley. this morning one young woman is battling for her life, another woman has been killed and a driver is behind bars after a deadly crash on a wialnut creek sidewalk. christie smith is live near that crash site with new information about the victims and the suspect. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. i just spoke with a couple of employees this morning. they say that they weren't on duty at the time of this accident but they're very concerned about the woman who is still hospitalized this morning. wanting to know more about her condition. we're also learning more about the 53-year-old woman who died in this accident, that she was a mother on vacation to see her son and his new wife when she was hit here on the sidewalk. you can see people have left flowers, stuffed animals and notes. while the driver has been identified. after being released from the hospital, he was booked into jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and could be in court as early as today. he's acc

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live in menlo park and has a look at what comes next for the damaged beechwood school. >> reporter: good morning, jon. yeah, when students return later this morning to their school here they won't be able to tell there was a fire here. yes, you do have that dirt patch where the burned-down building once stood but the parents and staff spent a chunk of the weekend trying to clean things up so the memory won't be as obvious for the students. of course they do know what happened. it was early thursday morning when a third grade classroom along with the front office in a modular structure burned down. the fire department believes it was a pinched electrical cord in the pack of a kitchen range that started this. it destroyed that portable struc

thank you for joining us, i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. that fire at the beechwood school has now been burning more than two hours. damian trujillo joins us live at the school with the very latest. damian, we saw they had to break out the ladder truck for this one. >> reporter: yeah, you know, this is a very stubborn fire. they have been pouring water on this the last couple of hours and still haven't been able to put it out. this fire is secluded to two portables actually here on the east end of the campus of the school right next to the railroad tracks. i mean these flames have been pouring out of these two portables since i got here about 45 minutes ago, half hour ago, and they still have not been able to put this out. a lot of white smoke billowing from this fire. i don't know what to tell you, they are still battling this fire. the good news to come out of all of this is that we have no reports of injuries at this time. we're at a location that we're kind of secluded from where the information is coming from. it's on the other side of
