i'm jon kelley. a memorial is growing for a 14-year-old santa rosa boy killed at a raceway north of sacramento. he was watching his 17-year-old cousin warm up for a car race when that car lost control and crashed right in the pit where the young man was standing. marla tallez joins us in the newsroom. we are hearing that the entire family was involved in racing, correct? >> yes, jon, the family has been racing for four generations. it is not like chase johnson, the 17-year-old driver, was a rookie. we have some point of view video of him racing last year in petaluma, which is where he goes to high school. today, he has won 140 races and last year's sprint car championship, coincidentally, the same race he was warming up for over the weekend when something went terribly wrong. he lost control and his car slammed into the pit crew where his 14-year-old cousin, marcus johnson, was standing. marcus was killed and so was another man, a 68-year-old from grass valley. today, investigators are looking into w

"today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live on the scene. fire crews say the damage could have been much worse. >> reporter: yeah, you know. it may have been a sprinkler inside the building that may have saved the day. i just got an update from the acting deputy fire chief here in berkeley. he says that there is damage to the restaurant but it may not be as bad as originally thought. that's the good news here at chez panisse where we're trying to talk with firefighters to get a closer look and show you what burned. the front and side of the restaurant is what got the most of the damage. a sprinkler head inside the building may have saved it. this is an all wood building. could have easily burned to the

i'm marla tallez in for jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia cannon >>> police in san jose are investigating a deadly crash near oak hill memorial park. the crash happened at monterrey road near tully. bob redell is live at the scene gathering information. what is the latest? >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. you can see behind me the crash was so severe that the front part of what we believe was a ford focus or ford fusion was flattened. the driver that died here on the scene is still stuck inside. san jose police believe he was speeding on southbound monterrey highway when he lost control around 2:00 this morning. his car clipped two trees and sheered off a light pole before coming to rest in those bushes in front of a fast food restaurant. san jose police officer who happened to be on a traffic stop nearby heard the crash, responded. paramedics declared the driver dead a short time later.

i'm jon kelley. >>> i'm laura garcia cannon. >>> a bizarre discovery inside a b.a.r.t. shaft. a man found crushed to death by the elevator itself. the real question is, why he was there in the first place? "today in the bay" bob goodell joins us. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. believes this was a homeless man who was sleeping on top of the elevator car inside the montgomery b.a.r.t. station. this is based on the bedding material and personal effects they found inside there. around 9:30, a passenger was riding the elevator up from muni to the b.a.r.t. concourse level. there was a crunching sound. this person heard a scream and the elevator automatically stopped. it is not clear if this man was crushed while on top of the elevator or somehow slid in between the elevator car and walls of the shaft. the fire department pronounced him dead on the scene. it took them several hours to remove his body. b.a.r.t. is still trying to figure out how this man was able to get in the shaft in the first place. the passenger stuck in the elevator got out unharmed. reporting live here in san francisco, b

"today in the bay's" marla tallez is live in fremont where a special event for lamar is taking place this weekend. good morning, marla. >> reporter: laura, good morning. it certainly goes without saying that this weekend is going to be extremely difficult for the lamar family. sierra's mother, march lane lamar, tells me she wanted to have one of tomorrow's events planned. there are two planned but she wanted one event in fremont where sierra was born and i will tell you what's happening in fremont in a moment. first, tomorrow is going to start in morgan hill where sierra disappeared. the lamar family is planning to hold a news conference at the search center on tilton road. this gets started at 9:00 tomorrow morning. we are told the santa clara sheriff is going to be there. we will be getting an update on that investigation.

. >> i'm jon kelley. we are following breaking news in the south bay. deadly hitting and run shutting down parts of 280 in san jose. bob redell live on the scene, there moments after the crash happened. a lot going on. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. it cob another 30, 20 minutes before all lanes of southbound 280 reopen. only one lane is open right now. you see three right lanes are shut down. this is southbound 280 near the mclaughlin on ramp. it is because of a body of a woman lying in the middle of the freeway. chp believes she was a ped, not clear what she was doing up here. coroner arrived within the past 10, 15 minutes. that means that they are going to be wrapping up here pretty soon according to chp. again, we are looking at possible complete reopening by 5:30. people driving object the freeway, you saw the body. called 911. this was around 3:15 this morning. officers are classifying this as a hit and run. they have no witnesses. this he need your help. if you saw anything in this area around that time, around 3:15. on

"today in the bay's" christie smith just arrived at the sheriff's office in santa rosa. what do we know so far? >> reporter: good morning to you. i can tell that you we're at the sheriff's department. there's been a little bit of activity within the last five minutes. a number of officers coming and going quickly from the parking lot. trying to confirm a lot of detamd detai details. there was an officer involved shooting overnight and this may be tied to some kidnapping as well involving a woman. now our photographer on scene is telling us that it appears a male suspect may have been killed in this interaction. this started around 11:00 last night is what we're hearing around santa rosa and added near odd fellows park road. the kidnapping this morning is on the sheriff's incident page and report
