i'm told consulted with presidential historian jon meacham, someone he's often turned to in these big moments to talk to the american people. now, the task at hand for the president and his advisers was identifying the priorities that he would push in this speech, but also trying to find a way to craft a message that will convince voters he is up for a second term. the president's speech is expected to focus heavily on economic issues. he is expected to call for an increase in the corporate tax rate to 28%, as well as setting the corporate minimum tax rate from 15% to 21%. the president is also expected to address everyday costs that americans are facing, especially on the issue of prescription drugs. he's expected to press congress to expand the ability for medicare to negotiate drug prices for more drugs right now that number is 20. he wants to get that up to 50. the president's also expected to speak a broadly about the need to preserve democracy and freedoms. one of those key freedoms that he often speaks about is reproductive rights, which the administration and white house reall

with the senior advisors, the president once again consulted presidential historian and author jon meacham, that someone that the president has often turned to for these high stakes speeches. and it really comes as the president is expected to lean heavily into this argument relating to economic populism. the president is expected to to speak about raising taxes on corporations, trying to raise the corporate tax rate to 28%. and also raising the corporate minimum tax, which is currently 15% to 21% to the president is also expected to talk about efforts to lower costs for everyday americans in their lives that will include a push to really focus on lowering prescription drug costs, specifically because expected to call on congress to expand the ability for medicare to negotiate drugs from 20 drugs to 50 drugs in one year, the president is also expected to focus on the issue of reproductive rights. that is something that democrats that's really feel will galvanize voters heading into november. he's also expected to talk about ukraine, that's something that he has wanted to see congress pass

. >> joining us now historian jon meacham and mike memoli, jonathan lemire back with us as well.ittle bit of a circus in town. >> a little bit of a circus in town with three presidents in one place for sure. most interesting to a lot of people here is the role of barack obama, the former president stepping out now not just as a closer coming in at the end of the campaign, but really stepping forward given all the back stories we've heard about rifts between the obama camp and the biden camp, making it very clear he is going to be out here for president biden. >> i'm told the former president is all in. they know how much is at stake in this election. i'm told their teams are talking multiple times a day, if not every day. just friday barack obama was at the white house, complimenting in the private conversation the president on the state of the union, talking about how great it was. i think that's part of this event tonight beyond just raising $25 million, a huge sum. the biden campaign has all sorts of statistics about how this stacks up to what trump isn't raising. this is goin

looking at right now, will be far more significant because it does seem we are about to break what jon meachamse thinks, when they show you some numbers here. so, in terms of that lead in and the whole rise of independents, i'll show you what it looks like on a chart. if we go back to 2004, roughly and even defection among republicans, democrats, and independents. and it is simply gone like this, like jaws. republicans and democrats have ended up in the same place. so, democrats did better for a while. now, as we said, independents are up to 45%. what does this reflect? i think it reflects a considerable degree of people's unhappiness with the way our democracy operates. only 27% of americans believe that our system is working well, or very well. the rest think it's not working very well. there are 32 states that permits party registration. a lot actually don't. so, those who live in the states to understand that, that's the way that is. disproportionately, a large number of independence and states that don't permit party registration. all of these green states, those have increased in indepen
