i'm jon scott. jenna: big news day and unexpected at that, really. i'm jenna leer. we're here in the fox news room and as jon mentioned, kim jonil who put the nation on the nuclear map died at the age of 69, his death beginning a period of what some are calling uncertainty for that region of the world, south korea putting its military forces on high alert. jon i don't know that as the nation calls on the 24 million citizens, many of whom are starving to rally behind the successor kim jong-un, a newly minted four star general believed to be 27 or 28 years old. as defense department officials confirm to fox, north korea fired two short missiles today. jenna: south korean sources say the launch was a test drill and may not be related to kim's death. in the meantime we have got to look the a the timing of this. doug mckelway, tell us what this means, when we talk about stability in the region, specifically for the korean peninsula, what specifically are the folks at state department talking about? >> we

jon: i'm jon scott. happening now in the fox newsroom, a brand new fox poll sheds light on the latest gop field. newt gingrich establishing his frontrunner status with an exclamation point you might say. taking a double digit lead as the 2012 presidential nominee preference. they come with an interesting twist. jenna: if the election were held today mitt romney fares better than president obama and then newt gingrich. romney with 42% versus the president's 44%. that is a bit better than a theoretical gingrich versus president obama matchup which has the president up by six points. it is worth pointing out though, like most polls, when you look at these you have to consider the plus or minus three at bottom of your screen there. statistically when you look at these polls they're all in a dead-heat. jon: the old margin of error question. that's not all these polls reveal though. our chief washington correspondent james rosen has more of a look. >> reporter: jon, jenna, good morning. dive deeper into the nu

i'm jon scott. republicans are renewing their call for democrats in the senate to end the bitter stalemate over the payroll tax cuts. jenna: earlier today senate majority leader harry reid called on house leaders to approve the two month inch text and bargain over the one year extension. americans want to know for certain that their taxes will not go up for a full year. >> i think it's important to note that the president, bi-partisan leaders in the house and bi-partisan leaders in the senate have all really asked for the same thing over the course of the last several months. let's extend the payroll tax credit for a year. and all we're asking for is to get the senate members over here to work with us to resolve our differences so we can do what everybody wants to do. jon: an editorial in today's "wall street journal" says republicans have thoroughly botched the politics of the tax-cutting debate adding quote, republicans have also achieved the small pheur aeblg of letting mr. obama position himself
