it was wonderful. >> stephen: jon stewart made a little news today.aying into the media's and journalists' natural narcissism. and by insulting the media directly, he makes the story a fight rather than talking about policy. how-- do you think he's right? do you think that you guys are being plaild? >> i do accept quite a lot of the criticism. i'll say two things. one, it is our role, and we must defend our profession. this is a noble profession. this is a profession that in the united states of america is-- is guaranteed and protected by the first amendment. we call ourselves "the fourth estate." it's important. we cannot bend over and surrender. we're not going to do that. so we have to be absolutely clear that we're not going to create these new normals. on the other hand, we cannot be dragged down every single rabbit hole. we must stand for issues and actually keep our eye on the prize, keep our eye on the issue and do not get pulled into somebody else's narrative and somebody else's game. so that is what i think-- and i do believe-- jon said that

i was very surprised on the last time i reread jon stewart mills on liberty. i discovered that that was the entire focus of his whole essay, not government coercion of speech, but peer pressure and social pressure. so, certainly, as a civil libertari libertarian, i recognize that any body or group that has sufficient power to curtail individual liberty is a problem of concern that i would want to do something about. i do have to say, in this audience, that my libertarian friend at the kato institute -- i have their constitution here, very much say well it is none of the government's business to regulate the private sector. but i think we would all agree that we certainly, as those people can be raising their voices because that's what they are doing, right? they are engaging in counter-speech. those of us who think that's inappropriate have to do the same thing. we have to agitate through writing, through speaking, through pressure on the businesses because after all a lot of this takes place in businesses. if they understand that they are going the lose custo
