. >> let's now get the latest from bangkok and speak to our correspondent jonah fisher.e're over 24 hours since the military coup. you seem to be in a busy area. can you hear me? what's happening? >> reporter: yes, i'm in the center of bangkok at the moment. up until now the military government has managed to stop being any public shows of resistance against the military take over of power. in the last 10 to 15 minutes here, if you come here have a look. they're sitting down through there. okay. if you look around this way, more demonstrators. up here, this is the sky train. this runs through the center of bangkok. stop the coup, the sign up there. a short while ago, we had soldiers around here. this demonstration is now illegal. the rules are brought in by the coup authorities. there was a bit of a standoff. they were sent to retreat. the demonstrators were pushed back. the soldiers were outnumbered. protestors are angrily shouting give us back our power. most of the protests camps have really been dispanded now. many have come together to express frustrations of what h

our correspondent jonah fisher is on the line now from bangkok. jonah, just bring us up to date. there's been quite a few changes. we heard about facebook being blocked. now back on again. what's the latest right now? >> reporter: okay. let me just talk you through some of today's developments. as to how many people they've had in detention and how many of those have been released, they said they summoned about 250. 200 of those people have chosen to come. and of those, 124 had been detained for a period of time and then released. now, separate to that, we have the news in the last couple of hours that red shirt leaders, that's the group that, broadly speaking, supports the government that's just been ousted here, that they have now been released from military detention. you remember when the coup unfolded last thursday. the people who were involved in those discussions were taken into military detention. so the people who've been released as part of that group have been released today. we've just spoken to one of them on the phone. he didn't want to be named. but he made it clea

let's go to jonah fisher live in bangkok.>> reporter: yeah, i'm at the army club where dramatic scenes here in the last hour or so. the talks have been going on between the political parties and various demonstrating groups in bangkok. came to an end in what were fairly chaotic scenes as the military tried to assert their control blocking entrances and exits. protest leaders were taken away in buses surrounded by soldiers. it's not clear what happened. in the announcement on thai television on free to air channels that the army had taken full control of power here.xpp2x we've been expecting this over the last couple of days. with the process of talks in place, it's a surprise it happened so soon. >> yes, indeed. things have changed since a couple of days ago when the army insisted the martial law was not a coup. what would the aim of the army be in taking control of the country? what would it achieve? >> the army is saying it's doing it to guarantee peace and stability in this country. only by doing this could they assert tha

if we go to bangkok now, jonah fisher is at a protest now. >> reporter: this is the most significantdemonstration we've seen since the coup was announced 24 hours ago here. i'm in the center of bangkok area of a shopping district. this is a small demonstration by maybe several hundred that have gathered here. if we walk this way around the back, in the last hour the group has grown in size. you can see -- that's the sky train, metro system here in gang dock. they put banners there. just by doing this and gathering here, that is illegal at the moment here in thailand. it is not permissible to have gatherings of more than five people. people coming here are running the risks of being arrested or taken away by the army. a short while ago -- the chants you can hear they're calling elections, elections. a short while ago the army did come here with military personnel. they were chased away by demonstrators very angry and very much in their face. to be quite frank, the military didn't know what to do. they didn't know whether they should be ;ñhor confr standing back. in the end, the milita

let's get the details, as far as there is some, from the bbc jonah fisher. he's at the talks venue. that's the army club in bangkok. inconclusive, jonah, you were saying earlier. that's no surprise. but do we have any more detail? >> reporter: yes. we just had a briefing by the army. perhaps understandably, because they called this meeting. they're keen to put a positive spin on it. we were told the meeting had taken place in a very friendly atmosphere. and that the army had stressed to all sides that their aim in declaring martial law was to bring peace, normalcy and happiness back to thailand and that the different political parties and different factions who were invited here have been given homework to go back and consult with their own constituencies and then return tomorrow. we're expecting talks to convene again here at the army club at 1:30 tomorrow. once again, they will try to come up with some sort of road map, some sort of process, if you like, to try and bridge the pretty crippling political divide here in thailand. >> the prime minister, jonah, was not present as i unde

let's get the latest from the bbc's jonah fisher who joins us from the army club in bangkok where the talks have been taking place. was there any ground made at all, jonah? >> reporter: well, at the moment, what we know from that meeting has come from the army. and they're the ones who summoned everyone to attend. they're keen to put a positive spin on what took place in the building behind me. they said there was a very friendly atmosphere between the various political groups and factions here. remember, we had present in the same room the anti-government faction that we've seen demonstrating on the streets of bangkok over the last several months and the pro-government demonstrators, the red shirts, who at the moment are camped outside bangkok. the leaders of the two main political parties here as well as representatives from the caretaker government. in some ways it was an achievement to get them all in the same room for a couple of hours to hold those discussions. and as i said, the army are keen to say everyone wanting to do the right thing by thailand, they said. basically what h
