we were engaged with jonas salk and his team for the development of inactivated polio vaccine in the '50s and then engaged with albert saban's team in the development of the oral polio vaccine. the surveillance unit and the epidemiology staff were very engaged in helping with the field trials of those vaccines over the period that followed that. and in documenting the declining disease after vaccination resulting in elimination of polio from the united states in 1979. 1979, incidentally i was about 6 years old then so i wasn't doing all that stuff. but i joined the fight a little bit later. but it reminds us how long this journey has been. i think that over the course of the last two days we have talked about the need to persevere and to take note of where we are. but not to lose sight of the road in front of us. we are on the verge of eradicating polio. when you look at 40 cases an hour in 1988, 350,000 cases a year globally, to a dozen reported cases this year that's an incredible achievement. but it's not good enough. this last mile as we talked about earlier will be an extremely
