jonathan, you have succeeded. in thinking about my remarks tonight about what academic freedom means to a biologist i realized that i was practicing the sociology of science, which is, indeed, would you do. so i would like to talk to you at a very personal level about what academic freedom means. at the close of the renaissance western man experienced a dramatic transformation. his relation to the world around him changed as he tried to represent a rational universe that would be more in accord with information that was perceived by the census. in part paintings of mistresses were lying naked on a bed replaced madonnas. representation substituted for symbol. scientists similarly saw a representation of the world that was both unified and coherent, but the laws governing the representation in the arts and humanities differ from those in science. in art, literature, religion, philosophy there are many possible representations of the world. each strives to provide an explanation for the origin, the state, and the fut

i've known jonathan for a good while now. he was a member of the board of trustees of the center that i just recently directed at stanford. and for all these reasons i allowed myself to think that maybe on the first day i arrived on my job i might open my top desk drawer and there would be a letter in there from jonathan. jonathan martin, senior politico writer will join us. as we talk about nashville, there's a lot of controversy going through this. first of all, how much has this really represented, the tea party movement? jonathan, you there at politico right now? >> i sure am, andrea. it's a great question. this is a grassroots movement in the true sense of the phrase. it's tough to get a sense who they are based upon one convention in one city. they're so fragmented, and they really did come from the bottom up. i don't think you can sort of make any broad characterization about the movement based upon who shows up for one convention in a hotel in nashville this weekend. they have to figure out how to sort of make the best of this. they haven't gotten great press into this event and having a steak and lobster dinner doesn't scream a populist movement exactly. >> as we've been pointing out and all the other conservative republican leaders have canceled. the house ethics competent ruled it wasn't appropriate, there might be questions raised going to thi

wnbc's jonathan dienst joins us with the latest. where was the arrest made? >> we don't know for sure. we believe it is in the pakistan/afghanistan border area. again, federal officials saying that this plot to blow up new york city's subways was going to be a suicide bombing plot with three new york men directly involved. those three new york men were in federal court yesterday and it was during that court hearing that the judge asked if there are going to be any more defendants in this case and prosecutors answered yes, there are al qaeda leaders from overseas who are correctly involved in orchestrating and running this alleged plot to bomb the new york city subways and that at least one if not several of those men will be sent back to new york, quote, promptly. we don't know the identity of the suspects from overseas or exactly when they'll be arrive here in new york for trial. but that's the word from federal prosecutors. you'll recall azazi is the man with two friends he went to high school with who traveled for bomb training and then accused of wanting
