( cheers and applause ) we met backstage.re's why i'm so happy you're here. you are a professor at yale, which was my chosen-- i was going to go but they have standards at yale, apparently. but you wrote an op-ed for the "wall street journal" that had i thought i need someone to help me, i get angry about the economy and about the feeling that i get that the financial sector, while making honest money, once they accrue money and power, generally rig the game so that they can continue a sort of incumbency of wealth. and that makes me-- i think you have a slightly different viewpoint on it. and you can perhaps help me not tear my hair out. >> well, companies like bain or financial companies generally do one of two things. they invest their own money, which nobody has a problem with; or they invest other people's money. >> jon: right. >> to get the other people's money collected, they have to make returns for them. they have to make profits. so it's not as though these notions that, you know, private equity companies in general

joining me now is jonathan sheik from "new york" magazine. jonathan, that's weird-sounding stuff.trump echo there. i don't know what he's trying to get at there. but i want to go to the gender gap with santorum. in his failed re-election bid in 2006 where he lost by a huge margin, he only got 39% of the women vote. and i want to play now some video of what santorum actually thinks about contraception and this might help explain that gender gap. let's listen to this. >> many in the christian faith have said, well, that's okay. you know, contraception's okay. it's not okay. it's a license to do things in the sexual realm that is counter to what -- how things are supposed to be. they're supposed to be within marriage. they're supposed to be for purposes that, yes, conjugal, but also procreative, and that's the perfect way that a sexual union should happen. >> now, jonathan, that is actually rick santorum talking about contraception, not in 1951. you notice, that's color imagery. so it was actually in 2011, a few months ago, in october! saying that sex is supposed to be only procreati

jounks now here in washington jonathan martin, senior political reporter for politico. christina belatoni, political editor for pbs's "news hour" and michael sheerer, political correspondent for the "new york times". all this media hyper ventilation over a poor choice of words by romney, was it justified, or did it get at something deeper? >> well, i think it's justified in the sense that it wasn't just this isolated gaff. this is part of a collection of misstatements he has made when it comes to issues relating to put his personal wealth, but also just sensitivity towards money in general, and so i think in that sense it's fair game to talk about what he said. in terms of this specific episode, we all than he has used this sort of phraseology before, and so i think in that sense it's a tad unfair to pile on. i do think you have to look at the broader context over the last three months how many things like this he has said. >> if it's a tad unfair to pile on, michael sheerer, and he talked about the safety net, why did many in the press play it as i don't really care ab
