jonathan lemire. a date is set for the first federal trial of a former president of the united states. on friday judge aileen cannonounced donald trump will be due in court on may 20th, 2024, to face 37 counts related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents. in doing so the judge appointed by trump talked about the start days. the doj asked for the trial to be held in early december of this year while trump's team requested it be be postponed until after the 2024 election. here judge cannon split the difference writing in part, quote, the court rejects the defendant's request to with hold seth a schedule now. nevertheless the government's proposed schedule is atypically accelerate and inconsistent with ensuring a fair trial. most states will have voted by march 20th. there will be a few including oregon and kentucky. they're scheduled for after the trial begins, but it all sets up the possibility that republican voters could choose trump as their standard barer right at procedurings are getting under way. and the lines are continuing to blur.
