i'm jonathan capehart, this is the sunday show. today, and a surprising turn of events, the government is open. late last night, with less than an hour over a potential shutdown, president biden signed a stopgap spending bill into law. the continuing resolution passed by both the house and senateitbipartisan majorities. this will keep the government funded until november 17th. th bl includes disaster relief funds, an extension of federal flight insurance program, and, faa reauthorization. no aid for ukraine, despite widespread bipartisan support for it in the senate. president biden was quick to address the issue, saying in a statement that he, quote, fully expects house speaker kevin mccarthy to keep his commitment to the people of ukraine. an expectation that could prove difficult for mccarthy and the run up to the now averted shut down. they face one embarrassing defeat after the other at the hands of far-right members of his own party. now, after putting a bill on the floor that one support, they face the threat of venus and by

i'm jonathan capehart, this is the sunday show. this morning, new developments in the israel-hamas war. a convoy of 17 trucks carrying aid from gaza has quashed the rafah border a day after a convoy of 20 trucks delivered food and medical supplies to the gaza strip. also new this morning, the israeli military says that it killed the deputy commander of the hamas rocket fire for us while pounding hamas targets in the gaza strip. nbc news has not independently verified this claim. that development comes as israel amps up its airstrikes in preparation for the, quote, next stages of war. this is according to the spokesman for the israel defense force. those next stages could be a likely ground invasion, which israel has been threatening since the hamas terrorists attacks 15 days ago. yesterday, the idf said its soldiers have been engaging in field exercises and are ready and near the gaza strip at this very moment. also yesterday, defense secretary lloyd austin announced that the united states will increase its military presence in the
