jonathan: thank you very much. datapoint around the fed -- carljoins us on what to expect that 8:30 a.m. august car sales pretty weak. gasoline prices also down. not good for gas station sales. what can we expect? good morning. retail sales not that poised for strong sales in august, which is troubling for the thesis of consumer-driven growth in the back half of the of hit we had weak overall economic performance in the first half. we are banking on consumers to extend the expansion into next year, when we have stronger contributions from things like business investment, government, and housing. nonetheless, if you look at retail sales, we are looking at a headline to climb. vehicle sales down about 5% in the month. gasoline prices down about 2.7% in the month. that says gas station sales should be lower as well. we have to focus on the details x retail x autos -- retail autos, x gas. kind of retail sales number do we need to see in the next few months of the year to get to the 2% target? carl: sure, if we want to get the 2% growth target, we need

jonathan: david ingles in tokyo. carl riccadonna with us now. alix: hawkish hold seems to be the rhetoric -- rhetoric in the market. carl: that will look like the fed is not raising rates today because the data is not justifying the move at this point. the fed taking a different stance in past episodes where they have taken a bit of a dovish turn in not moving on rates or advancing the ball down the field in terms of policy normalization. he saw expectations of future rate hikes slide much further into the future. the fed wants to pay the expectations around december for rate increases so they will hold but will continue to make the case that policy normalization is coming sometime soon. alix: the big deal is the dot plot. we will get projections for 2019 as well. the whole median estimate comes below the 3% they have now and the other is the hawks are going to jawbone those dots higher to see more hikes later. which one wins? reconcile,ed has to initially they were saying for rate hikes this year and now we are likely getting just one. i think
